CCP Wolfman, this is intended for your eyes. I'm sure you have gotten quite the shock jumping into the world of vehicles, please let me assure you that not all of us are like that
I would like to talk to you about something you said in your Vehicles in 1.5 and beyond! thread.
CCP Wolfman wrote:vehicles have no clear role on the battlefield. Vehicles need to be powerful, but not overpowered. They need to be vulnerable, but not weak. TheyGÇÖve been all of these things at various points in DUSTGÇÖs development, but theyGÇÖve never quite found their niche. I couldn't agree more with what you said about how powerful vehicles need to be, not too much but just enough. Though I'm saddened that you think vehicles have no roles on the battlefield.
I have found many roles that I can fill in my assault dropship, and have spent months designing and building it the way I have. I will discuss my fit later though. For now let me give you a run down on the types of roles I can provide.
Transport: I believe this is the first thing everyone thinks of when the word Dropship is mentioned. As dropships are the only airborne vehicle they can provide the fastest method of transport in the game, and sometimes the safest. Even though I fly an assault variant a squad of 3-4 can make a really big difference when dropped directly on the enemy.
Point control: Any pilot worth his salt will know that flying a dropship with out a crew is, well pointless. When a dropship has even a minimum crew of say 1-2 mercs It can still preform very good point control especially on large 5 point maps. When one red decides to take an LAV to a point far off with no blues, a dropship can get there fast. In fact sometimes it can get there so fast that you can not only destroy the LAV, but also the red. Almost as fast as the point started blinking a dropship and two shock troopers can be on seen and get the situation under control. Without diverting forces that might be other wise engaged on the line.
Recon: Intel is half of the battle. Knowing where the enemy is massing/shifting is extremely important to mounting a proper defense/offence. Fortunately the dropship comes equipped with a large spotlight so you can scout out hostiles. After dropping a shock squad I usually start scouting the general area and or points of interest in case there is a tank or heavy hiding around a corner that they don't know about. Giving your shock team info on squads spawning or counter attacking can make all the difference between a successful raid, or mission failure.
Air superiority: Keeping the skies clear of other dropships and tower forge gunners and snipers goes a long way to victory for your team. With the advanced maneuverability of the assault dropship, and a skilled pilot, the skies of the battlefield can be safe and clear, tower gunners will pay dearly for not having a skilled pilot of their own.
Anti Sniper operations: Taking out mountain snipers can be a pain, we all know the reasons why. Dropships can scan the mountains and eliminate snipers that take to high places. Helping not only your own squad, but the whole team. Further more dedicated dropship pilots can preform Sniper operations, moving snipers to good vantages in a fifth of the time and making it very difficult to track their position.
These are a few of the 'niches' I have adopted throughout my months of flying. I am still discovering more, and I'm always looking to expand my services. Ran a forge gunner in my dropship the other day and discovered that its actually super effective!
So if we look at your goal for 1.5
CCP Wolfman wrote:THE GOAL
Make vehicles fun. There are a few things I would like to put forward to you to help you achieve this goal for dropship pilots.
The price of dropships and or vehicle moduals and turrets should be reduced. How much is up to you, though most pilots break their banks trying to support this addictive habit! I think all pilots could have a little more fun if we didn't have the pressure of grinding 5 games on the ground to get back in our dropships.
Give pilots more incentive to actively pursue these roles. As we could really use some WP for the services we provide. I have noticed that i generally get paid less when i call in a dropship. Even if i get shot down and go 6-3 on the ground i still only get paid half of what i would normally get running my assault rifle on the ground from the start. An example of one idea posted several times on the forums was getting WP for any kill or hack 30-60 seconds after a drop. Simple things like these would encourage pilots to use the dropship for what it was meant for, and pay pilots who do their jobs well. Giving reason to pilots would go along way to making us happier, and keeping our hangers full of sky sharks further increasing our fun
Many pilots agree that the survive-ability of dropships should be dependent on the skills (both in game and real world) of the pilot. My fit requires me to fly well, one slip up and i lose my python. However it is the most effective design i have come up with in my entire piloting career. Maybe increase the handling of STD and LOGI dropships a bit. I'm leaving this as a maybe.
So there are roles on the battlefield for dropships, what we are really lacking is a reason to do our jobs as the only thing we get paid for is kills and kill assists. The best possible thing you can do for dropship pilots is to give us meaning (and maybe bigger maps ) so we have more to strive towards.
ill put up my fit and explain why i use it under this post. I hope this helps Wolfman, most pilots want to use dropships for what they were meant for.
Oh and if another dev see's this could you kindly tell wolfman to give this a read! thank you |

They won't listen. Your ideas are good. They are not new, however. CCP has yet to address them and have yet to get off of their hands with it. It's pathetic really. |

I know they are not new ideas, in fact i have been saying similar things for a while now. Though their attention is on vehicles now, and if they are going to listen to anything on the forums I hope they read thoughts from skilled pilots who care about their vehicles. Also with the huge amount of idiots posting about vehicles I'm sure it will be refreshing for them to see some constructive ideas to help them with this daunting task. I will continue to try until they remove my dropship from the game or tell me they don't like me
No other game gives me what I get from flying my dropship in dust. |

I'm guessing by 'roles' he probably meant that variations between different vehicles/ship of the same type. i.e. Medium suits -> assault/logi; Dropship -> ? ; Tanks -> ?
Furthermore logi suits (and assault suits/scout suits to a lesser extent) can modify their roles through using different equipment/weapons, whereas vehicles are almost cookie cutter, and either straight up tank n gank, or murder taxis etc.
Good ideas though. |

dropships also have assault and logi variants, I fly assault dropships so I'm pretty sure he wasn't talking about that. He used the word 'niche' which makes me think he doesn't think dropships have a role. I dislike the term 'niche' for dropships as they are the only airborne vehicle and the 'niche' of a dropship is to be a dropship
If he was talking about the variants then I feel pretty stupid! |

I agree this is defiantly one of the things they could change to help pilots pay for their dropships |

You're going to get WP for providing transportation, and more health. Good times ahead for Dropship pilots, I think. |

Aye, I understand that there are dropship variants such as assault DS etc. But I guess these ships have no defined 'role' per say. Both variants are capable of transporting troops, have turrets for use and the only difference is one has a pilot gun and the other a mCRU. Maybe eventually dropships (or air vehicles) will perform 'roles' which can change or vary depending on their fittings, i.e. ewar platform, troop movement, recon, skirmisher, heavy air to air, heavy air to surface etc.
All conjecture on my part though. |

The main message here is we have plenty of roles, we just don't get paid for them. So incentive would give us our WP for our niche. Wolfman seems like a very smart guy, and my favorite dev for giving us transport WP and HP that we've needed for so long! I do hope he posts here tho, that would just make my week. |

It really makes me salivate all the more at the idea of someday getting those Fighters they keep teasing us with. I'd love to be able to get my air combat fix in Dust as well, and not just Ace Combat Infinity when that comes out. |

Hey, I really like this man.
I drive a Shield Tank which much of the balancing seems focused on Tanks. Not much mention of dropships, but I'm sure that is incoming.

Yeah no patch notes out yet, just some guidelines set out by Wolfman. So fingers crossed. |
