I'm comparing differences between Militia Caldari dropship(Viper) and standard one (Myron).
I'nm having difficulty figuring out why people actually pay money for the myron. The differences seem tiny.
SAME shield recharge, and low slots. only +107 shield, +77 armor. +30 CPU, but almost identical PG. And okay.. ONE more large slot. But with identical power.. umm...
People pay TWICE the price for this???
On a related note: the miltia versions seem to be stuck in starwars "land speeder" mode. Is it that the standard ones can automatically fly higher, or is there some special fitting I need, to be able to get a viper to the top of a higher building?

While it doesn't say it in the stats, the Myron has Significantly better handling than the Viper.
Also pushing the nose forward makes you dive, unless you hold L1, then (based on the position of the dropship) you either climb slowly or remain at the same altitude. Atm the only way to gain altitude is hold L1 and activate an afterburner. |

Aha.... so there is a magic module. I was staying hard on the L1... and getting a big 20m off the ground, then topping out :p Guess I'll be looking at buying some after burners, then! Thanks :)
... annoying that none of the dropship guides ive seen, have mentioned this issue :(

if you want a good dropship guide, you should check this out http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCy11xToip47aIW0M9TSOKrQ his channel is dedicated to dropship flight, he is currently working on a tutorial series, good luck in the skies |

Heh, yeah.
One odd thing, though.
I thought afterburners were an "Active" module. That you had to trigger them manually somehow, like you have to trigger shield boosters in a tank or something. But... just equipping them, seems to makes it work better. I can now go higher (YAY!)
kinda wierd

If you are finding that you need to equip an afterburner to gain altitude then this is either a bug or operator error. None of my dropship fittings have afterburners and I am able to fly higher than the MCC with all of them. |

and you have a militia fitting?
I'm only talking about the militia vehicles. I dont have the SP invested in higher :)
I hold down L1 until the cows come home, but it only goes a short distance off the ground. i'd estimate 50m
maybe the "ground" i'm on wasnt the lowest part of the map or something, but it still seems absurd

As far as I know there isn't an altitude limit, if there is I haven't hit it. Also which do you fly Gorgon or viper? |

remember that Logi ships can go Higher than the ADS. So different quality ships have different flight ceilings. |

As you tip the nose down the ship drops. Thrust stops the ship from dropping and negates tip. However. A drop ship only has a certain amount of maximum thrust. At some point you cross the lines. Tip the nose too much and there is not enough thrust to keep you level and you drop. Less tip more height is gained.
To go up you need to make sure you are not tipping the nose too far down. What you seem to be doing is being a master of level flight, Well done... you have got the tip balanced against the thrust. Pull back and tip less and you will go up. One thing to note is that on the best of days dropships climb really slowly.
Twist climbs are quicker. The DS will go up faster when you are actually tilting backwards. Tricky to explain.. Its not discussed here in this clip but this is what the pilot is doing in this short segment as he climbs before the dive. |

waitwhut?
Lemme be even more explicit, since maybe you're misunderstanding.
I called up the viper. On level ground. I touched NOTHING but L1. I hold it down.
I only got maybe 50m off the ground.
Hmm..
Maybe I need to make myself two fittings now; one with afterburners, and one without, and test height form the same map from the same place.
It also would be nice if those who are capable of fitting them, posted some kind of height limit comparisons of the dropships.
Your last comment about twist climbs, sounds like a bug. A useful bug to know... but still sounds like a bug :-/

Hmmm.. that should not happen. I any DS. holding L1 and nothing else you will reach flight ceiling. There WAS a bug in 1.2 i think (or was it 1.1) where climbing in 1st person was bugged as you describe, but it was fixed. I tested straight L1 climbs in EVERY ds and they all reach ceiling (this was 5 weeks ago) although they tend to tip back the higher you go.
I will do as you ask and make a video comparison. I'll need a day to do it though.. capture..upload etc...I can do split screen (well the software can, never tried it) so ill try do that for you. |

I should also wonder, if there is a hidden height ceiling modifier based on whether you have no dropship vehicle SP invested. Bah. I'll have to remember to test somehow.
They really, really, need some basic flight instruments for these things. Like an altimeter. |

I just got the footage. Viper vs python. Same exact takeoff point. Same match. I'll post in 9 hours.... It's midnight here in my part of the world . Sorry.
The video should make it clear what should happen.. If that does not happen for you then report it as a bug. I used no fitting with any armour plate or afterburner. Basic fits. So there is no movement penalty.
I had no issue going up, though I did go forward as I was on a backwards slope and the correction pushed me forward. But I pressed only l1 with some left stick forward, tiny amounts, to stop a flip |

Bought a viper. it went all the way up!

maybe a one-time glitch or something I ran into previously.. dunno. Sorry for the confusion :(

Afterburners are actives, but you also have torque modules which are passive. check in militia modules, you'll see both. Equip the right one.
Good luck flying, viper is bad, but once you get the myron, you'll like it more. the assault is really fun but way too expensive. |
