Let me start by saying that I am an adult. I have a job and I am pursuing a graduate degree, I have leisure time since I don't yet have a family and money to burn for the same reason. In short, I am your demographic, the middle of your bell curve personified. Yet, I only have so much time and so much money. I have been happy to invest both of these resources in Dust because I believe it has the potential to be a truly outstanding game.
I have attempted to get my friends, who are of a similar age and place in life, to play with me and met with great resistance, even from those who enjoy FPS and Strategy games, both of which Dust contains elements. This is due almost exclusively in part to the grind associated with this game, which is well known. Any adult who has a job and can therefore buy Aurum and support your game has, by default, limited time to invest.
I think one of the biggest barriers dust has to a wider player base is that it takes a serious amount of grind to be really good at something. You cannot pick up dust and feel useful immediately... or even for several weeks or months depending on the time you have available to invest in playing the game.
It may be worth looking into to double or even triple the starting SP. In this way EVERY player from day one can be good at at least one role. That would be enough SP to train up a weapon into being decent, unlock a decent standard suit and put a few modules on it. This way we have people starting as competitors rather than targets.
I'm pretty new, but I don't mind a grind. Any friends I've told about the game have cited the time investment needed to be even viable as the reason they won't come play with me. Maybe a beginning SP boost would encourage players to come join in.
Of course, if you implement this, I'd love it to be retroactive and give us all a chunk of SP for grinding through the tough times.

I'm pretty sure the day you can tell your friends hey there are stupid drones you can attack! They will be like geeewilikers! Lets get it on :) grinding won't be as bad because you won't be going up against someone who is uber good.and you'll be able to poke the drones with a stick:) |

PvE should (I say should because I'm not confident in how it will be done, if ever) be brilliant for this game. |

I never found the grind that bad.
To me at least, I let the passive do the grinding for me.
While I may have much less SP then the other characters that joined when I did, I have a good deal more fun with not feeling forced to play.
EDIT- I like the idea of tripling the start SP so newberries have the ability to jump into a role sooner.
The added login bonus we are getting in 1.4 can also ease the grind slightly. |
