I haven't ever had a really strong opinion on the respecs issue, my personal opinion is mostly just, "if they give us a respec, I have no problem with that, but if they don't, I'm fine with that too." But I wanted to throw out a little musings on my part just because there are hundreds of threads on this and lolwhynot throw my opinion into the mix.
Before I start my opinion: No, I have not spec'ed into FotM, nor have I ever done it. I have played Minnie Logistics since mid-E3 and I believe I always will. I usually use the AR due to my lack of a sidearm, but spec'ed into ScRs this build since I smelled some serious shield usage coming up. Now Calogi shields have had a nerf (nothing major) and armor is getting a buff (really major), and guess what? I don't want my ScR anymore. It is going to do a total of jack + **** to heavies running with excess of 800 armor alone, not to mention shields. So yeah, I am partially biased to getting a respec, deal with it.
The anti-respec crowd typically comes up with the, "FotM user benefit" argument when it comes to the discussion of respecs. They don't want a respec because all the noobs will flock to the most powerful weapon. I don't favor respecs despite this, but rather because of it. To elaborate on this, what do you think would have happened to the flaylock if it hadn't become FotM? It wouldn't have gotten so much attention, and consequently wouldn't have gotten its well-deserved nerf. There would still be a select few that used it, however. They would destroy enemies with their sidearm that functioned as well as a primary, inflate their K/DR, drink noob tears, etc. A few people would complain on the forums, perhaps, but not enough to warrant action from CCP. So the weapon never gets balanced. Same story for the TAC AR, same story for REs, same story for Replication Swarm Launchers, same story for every "OP" weapon in the game. This is because if only a few people do well with a weapon, it is working as intended, its niche has been reached, and it is "balanced" in CCP's eyes.
So right now you are saying, "but people will build up SP and spend it in other weapons anyways, everyone will still find the "OP" weapons without respecs!" True, but it won't happen as quickly. Respec now, everyone flocks to the most powerful weapon, CCP takes information about the weapon, and they make necessary adjustments, and (hopefully) the weapon becomes balanced. This is opposed to: No respec ever, people slowly accumulate SP to go from STD, to ADV, to PRO weapon by weapon before they find whatever is the most unbalanced while in the mean-time a select few people have already found the best weapon and are raping face, collecting tears, etc. and they continue to do it until enough noobs have spec'ed into it to warrant CCP's attention on the matter.
Tl;dr, Respecs promote balance by drawing attention to the "OP" weapons, we don't need them to be AUR purchased systems, they should just be done when any kind of rebalancing or new content is added so the imbalances are found faster, and henceforth the game becomes more fun faster as well. |

firstly what is wrong with FOTM?
if a player likes that weapon and plays better with it why isnt he allowed to use it...
for example- you wouldnt go to a gun range shoot a weapon that isnt zeroed to you, if your personal weapon that is zeroed to you on the range next to it.
if you can support the FOTM argument please explain? |

I don't have a problem using a weapon that you like best, but when everyone is using that same weapon, it is probably is a "one size fits all" situation, which is bad when you want every weapon to be equally viable at its own situation. The exception to this rule is the AR, although it is less viable in all situations while at the same time is viable in ALL situations. This is compared to say the shotgun, which can't do anything at range, but can do much, much more than the AR at CQC. |

I think the Fotm will happen with or without respec. Getting any single skill to level 3 is cheap enough and takes a day or two of playing. So arguing that respec will lead to Fotm rushes so CCP will balance it doesn't work. FOTM will always be there regardless. Asking for a respec because you have a weapon that is now balanced is just tough luck. |

thats true.
but lets be honest the player base at the moment is mostly EVE players and we all know they are try hard losers who wish to get their k.d.r and sp up no matter what so FOTM would be unavoidable.
regardless of repecs CCP fails to provide any reason why we cant have them .. so i will continue to say respecs are needed until they can..
a. provide a viable reason as to why they arent a feature yet
b. provide respecs on a quarterly basis.

Like Logi said..this process is quicker with respecs and therefore the game is made better by fixing issues quicker. But I degress and show you error as well. The flaylock was not OP at lvl 3 ...But at prof 3 one could see the unbalance quite well. Almost all weapons "OP" ness comes when the bonuses are in full effect. This is obtained quicker with respecs and the game would only improve. |

im fairly new (2 months in) so i haven't got alot of SP (4.5mil) im looking to get back or anything. but i think respecs should cost 10-20 dollars and be limited to 1 per 6 months. respecs dont equal "pay to win" |

Agreed with you bri and what you said about the flaylock is exactly the same thing is happening with assault Forge Guns. Only a selected few are using it and that's why people don't notice how obviously over powered the damn gun is. Very good example thank you.

Your argument misses one little point that if everyone just chases the FoTM, the devs also have to chase it, meaning we get stuck in a perpetual circle of nerf and buff and nerf and buff. This way you're locked into your choice, you have to invest into the new OP and it slows down the rate of gain.
Trust me, CCP know LONG before you do if a weapon or vehicle is OP, they have access to meta data that you'll never see unless they chose to release it. They're no doubt already aware of the Forge Gun Issue, they released the metrics for the Flaylock and they addressed it.
CCP have been know for always ignoring the crying on the forums and using hard data to fix weapon balance. The SP systems caps the rate at which a weapon can be too much of a problem, like the Flaylocks. Sure they were broken but it took while for people to move their character into getting into the good, really broken ones and that gave CCP to work on everything else rather than just tweaking a number and checking it all day to placate forum whiners.
Adding respecs just means people will only chase down FOTM builds, and FOTM only exists when it's blatantly broken, meaning we just get stuck in that buff\nerf cycle.
Trust me. This way is better. For everyone. |
