Step 1: Get plenty of sleep and don't burn yourself out.
If you have to constantly put yourself on edge to accomplish something in a shooter, eventually your life and health will become unbalanced. Perhaps even in ways you are not fully aware. People can endure some amazing things but we all have our breaking point, so know your limit.
Step 2: Maintain a healthy diet and exercise.
If your health is good and your mind is clear, you will be less affected by external pressures. I.E. who cares what's happening around you as long as you have rockin' abs.
Step 3: Be awesome at something productive and fun.
This enables one to have a higher degree of autonomy in life and with that you will be more able to control your happiness as well as less likely sweat the small stuff.
Step 4: Be open to new concepts and perceptions.
The universe is a big place full of more ideas than you can comprehend. We are all small, even insignificant, and if you are open to that you are less likely to be defensive. If you get praise or new viewpoints, fine. Harsh criticism, also fine. Even if a person is blatantly wrong and knows next to nothing, they can still provide valuable insights on human behavior.
Step 5: You're the boss.
Yes stuff happens, but it is always your choice on how you respond to it. You either abdicate that responsibility and let your base emotions escalate the situation or you can take charge and maybe learn something from the broken pieces. You don't have to play by anyone else's rules if you're aware of it.
Killed by mass driver, you're the boss. Internet argument, you're the boss. That time you run over by a truck, you're the boss. The other time you got run over by a truck, you're the boss.
Step 6: Re-read list in Patrick Warburton's voice.
