Just let yourself go.
I do this all the time. It's a reflex for me, when I play a video game, to automatically start forming a background story for the thing. I can't control it, it just goes. So believe me when I give you this advice:
- Make sure it all checks out. Nothing is more embarassing than posting a good story and having someone correct you for a few little details. Do some research and make sure you know what you're writing about before you start.
- Be sure it makes sense. I've come up with some real helmet-scratchers before. Make sure you break it down so that the less literally adept can still understand the story.
- Make it good. It's got to be worth reading, and you have to cover all your bases if you want it that way. Make it long, but not too long. Use colourful words, but not overcomplicated ones.
- Above all, have fun with it! If you ever feel like you have better things to do while you're writing, you're not having enough fun. Toss around ideas in your head. Make some stuff up that the reader can't argue with, but still spices up the story. Make writing an enjoyable experience.
*cough*.... Well, good luck to you. I look forward to reading your creation. |

Since I create characters on a regular basis for manuscripts I tend to follow a pretty standard process.
Firstly I tend to imagine what my character looks like because that sometimes begins to shape how my character develops, normally I get an overly idealised version of my final character.
Secondly I think of ways to flaw my character, so that instead of being a bog standard handsome good looking hero type I get grim, gritty, and deep characters.
Then I begin to craft the actually back story. What do I want to achieve with this character, what point does this character have, what ideas want to be conveyed through this character, and what I personally want them to achieve.
From there I take it further, do some research into the lore whatever I'm working on, or if i'm writing fiction delve deeper into the creation of my own lore. Once I narrow down a bit of a niche that my character can come from I begin to write the back ground.
When doing this its your chance to really throw your character into the narrative, do you like writing about elite spec ops soldiers, or do you like writing about inspecting heroes, dastardly villains, do whatever it takes renegades or ultra loyalist zealots.
E.G- When I was first starting to craft Kador''s character I was reading Dune, followed up by the Ultra Marines Omibus. I liked the pseudo knightly style of Uriel Ventris, and Paul's overly analytical, cool, calm and collected mind set, but wished to temper that with a bit of religious Zeal given the Amarr are crusaders.
As a standard rule of thumb I tend to begin with generic and uninspired characters, or characters that do not physically look like they would stand out. I love writing characters that are just normal humans with all of their flaws and weaknesses overcoming the odds.
As he developed I would begin to depict him as an internalist, as seen in part 1 of crucible, then developed him in part 2 with his religious persona being more drawn out, as I write part 3 I want to mesh these together and bring out his relationship with his Vherokior servant Satja, who he sees an adoptive daughter.
Once you have a basic background you can go from there.
I built Kador on the solid principle that he was just a normal rank and file solider, or believed himself to be, of the Empire. he was Arkborn (born on an Imperial Ark Class vessel), spent most of his life space borne working with his Father, ex Templar lieutenant, turned merchant trader.
Then I have to throw in some reason for Kador to fight or at least give him a philosophical out look on the Matari. So his father was killed by Brutor Tribe protestors in Matari space while Kador was sent to the Sarum Imperial Military schools where he was properly educated. Initially he hated the Minmatar, but time and service in Low Sec warzones tempered that.
Until, I had to make him an immortal merc, he was killed recovering an ancient Amarrian religious artefact, the entire Sarum Imperial Guard regiment was considered expendable, and he and his comrades were killed in the defence of the space port.
After that history is history.
In any case that is how I generated my character. If you want more suggestions let me know, I've made up, written into lore, and channelled other players characters very well in the past. |

Adding onto what True said. There are character charts on the internet. Those work for fleshing out your character.
Usually while playing Dust I try to think how my character feels while running towards an objective, how fast her heart might be racing when two heavies emerge from an uplink, how revved up she gets when she goes on a kill streak and when she gets pissed when someone 1v1 with her and she dies because she was a second slower than them.
I remembee one night I was playing and me and this other Minmatar Assault non proto just looked at each other for a second, then just started shooting at each other. He won though but I thought. I wonder what would go througj Aria's mind seeing another Minmatar fighting for the enemy side. |

It actually helped me move away from idealised characters a couple of years back and move into more realistic characters. |
