It seems that I have discovered what really kept me going and why I still come to play Dust every day beyond the expectations of what Dust could be. It's a particular feeling and I noticed that I get this feeling every time I am in a match running around with just the nova knives. It's the adrenaline rush.
I get this rush every time I run into a room full of enemy mercs and clear them out for my friends. I get it every time I am zig-zagging my way towards a heavy dropsuit wielding an HMG and make him lose his expensive suit. I get it every time face off against a shotgun-wielding scout. I even get it every time I catch someone trying to capture my objectives and stab them in the back with two fully-charged strikes.
Imagine, you are in the heat of the moment. You are surrounded by a pack of 3-4 enemy mercs in a domination match and your only weapon is the nova knife. Yet somehow you came out unscathed and you forced the final merc into a retreat. Your eyes are twitching endlessly from left to right, up and down, and not even bothering to blink while checking your surroundings for more targets. Screw capturing the objectives. You're there to cause as much trouble as possible to the enemy. You spot a red in your minimap and sprint to his location just to catch him around the corner, OHKing him and then sprinting off to wherever your instincts tell you.
Hell, your instincts completely override your emotions as you learn to zero in on any target that happens to be strolling by while your thoughts quickly sort out which route to take, what to do if the enemy you run into is a heavy. So much information is running through your head that it's wonder why you haven't lost your cool at this point.
At the end of the match, you realize that you have 24 kills, 2000 war points (1200 of which came from kills) and you are at the top of the scoreboard. You look back as you return to the merc quarters and see that you almost there. You are near the pinnacle of your ninja potential and now there are players out there who fear you every time they see your name listed in the opposite team. Some of them even go out of their way to bring out suits fitted just to deal with you specifically.
I am at that point now in this game and I am proud of what I have accomplished. And to think, I started off as a naive-looking noob who took on the ultimate challenge of taking a seemingly useless weapon and turn it into a true weapon of war in this game.
It brings tears of joy to my eyes now that I think about it. I'm just damn good with the nova knives.
