 So today I made a new character that has one purpose: to fly dropships for the aid of my team. At first I wasn't taking it that seriously using militia DS's, getting blown up by railgun tanks, and it wasn't really benefitting my team. Then I made a new fit I called the "gunner";

 Gorgon
 Militia active scanner
 mobile cru
 2 militia small blasters
 armor repper
 overdrive
 PG extender thingy
 = approx 110k isk

I got a squadmate and a blueberry to get in. I hovered in a circle over enemies, pointing the gunners at the masses. We got maybe 4-5 kills until a AI railgun turret got me .___. but honestly, while it lasted it was one of the most fun, and satisfying experiences in dust. I think I will have lots O' fun with dropships in days to come.

Sadly in their current state no one trusts a dropship with CRU so I'd be tempted to loose it for an extra extender if I were you and do drop offs on the fly or with a dedicated team

A blaster ADS is a lot of fun when your team can keep the AAA in check.

my gorgan fit is an afterburner militia scanner. two voltic energized plates and a light efficient armor rep with two it was either adv or std scattered blasters. It does surprisingly well for a militia ship

Dropships can make pretty good use of missile turrets as well but they're not so easy to use. Need to compensate aim heavily based on the ship's current movement and probable future movement. Gotta learn the degree of projectile inheritance and how the vehicle moves.

I have a great Eryx fit to get extra damage for my gunners and tank a few hits when the going gets rough, it's a lot of fun but quite expensive.

Just wait until you get assault dropships. Those things will make you go broke.
 I am a victim.

yea and 9:10 the blue berries who spawn on the CRU shoot the MCC instead of the infantry i've lined up directly below them

most of the CRU spawns are total noobs because like you said no vet trusts a random DS

if you like dropships then they get better with more and more SP, but there is no %100 survival recipe, after 5 mil SP spent i have about a %60 of not getting shot down in a pub match

also if you love flying be prepared for vocal jealous morons, backseat flyers, and other noobs. it's so bad i turn the mic off.

I didn't think you were a new player.

Well, welcome to dropships. The most fun you can have while being exploded.

the gorgon is imo the Rifter of dust, which in EVE a rifter is a cheap ship that does suprisingly well.

Dropships are only effective at killing when the other team is ignoring you. Otherwise, just hover at the flight ceiling and let people skydive.

What really bothers me is that only the assault dropships don't have terrible handling- bring the old dropships back!
Seriously, ADSs are better transports than basic dropships- speed is everything.

 In regard to you edit:
The Gallente have their own problems associated too:-
They are more vulnerable to explosions (once their shields are down) - i.e. Swarms, which everyone has, and they all know your airborne with the 'Dropship sound' that kicks in the moment you get in the driver's seat.

My advice is stick to the design you like for aesthetic / fitting purposes. I chose Gallente because of its design and the layout suits my flying style

No Maverick and Goose here. I don't do dropships. Seen a kid call one in, jump in the pilot's seat and flipped onto a crate where it later exploded. All you can see were blue numbers representing isk being subtracted. Props to those who can fly it and invest their time into it. I can't do it.

assault dropships can be awesome fun, but trying to use normal dropships and relying on randoms to gun for you its just terrible, gotta have friends on comms, and even then you'd probably do more for your team just running the ground.

 That's exactly my cheapo fit.
