After avoiding skilling into ARs almost completely since beta I have finally died enough times to them to want to see what all the fuss was about.
In my tooling around I have noticed that the Burst AR variant is HORRIBLE in comparison to all the other options. With the base AR being the best and most versatile the Burst variant is lacking in so many ways I just can't see how this is going to pan out if this is what the "Combat Rifle" standard is.
Before I get into it let me just say that ARs are ridiculous. The base variant has no drawbacks what-so-ever and having never really invested in them prior to this week I'm amazed at the level of killing they are capable of once you put some SP into them. I only wish my SG and MD were this good in all situations.
So, back to the Burst AR. What are its benefits? 3 shot burst? well how is that any different than burst firing the base variant? Same motions required and it seems like the base AR gets off more than 3 bullets per trigger with no 'lag' between bursts.
It gets a scope like the TAR? Although the extended vision is nice, good luck putting it to use with the range on the burst AR. it seems like the range is equal to the base ARs with maybe a 5m increase. That further vision isn't very helpful when your shots are merely scratching the enemy.
Burst fire rewards accuracy with 3 hits for everyone landed. Well I agree with this point but I have a sneaking suspicion that hit detection and bullets not registering are playing havoc on this weapon. There were multiple times I had the enemy lined up in the 30m range and pulled the trigger, only to see a small sliver of shields disappear.
This is just anecdotal but in firefights with GAL suits and with 3x 35hp damage I should have seen a good chunk of shields disappear. My concern is that the 3 bullets may either hit scan individually and some server latency resulted in only 1 of 3 landing OR this gun is a victim of disappearing bullets (like my poor Shotty).
IMO - either of these issues seriously break this gun and the outlook for the Combat Rifle doesn't look so good. Either way, I will be skilling into it to try it out but it does make me concerned that the AR appears to still be king in this game.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? or some additional insight into the Burst AR? |

I find it is a head shot machine.
As for the Breach, a complex damage mod is really effective on it because of it's standard high damage. |

It's not just the burst that has a hit detection problem. My SCR sometimes does not register hits.

burst is good if you know when to use it. Same for the breach. I don't like either in general gunfights tho |

Burst suffers heavily at CQC. I find the TAR to be doing better at that range funnily enough :\ |

With that playstyle youre better served with the TAR. More range, more damage per shot, same scope.
The burst cant sit back very far because of the limited range. It just brings nothing different that the base or TAR variants dont already do
I have had success with the breach in CQC and for its small range its pretty beastly. I think it should have a 60 clip size as well since the offset is already -range and -ROF.
I bet once the Combat Rifle is released everyone will end up using the variants instead of the base variety if it doesnt bring anything new in function / purpose. |

What he means is that the "placeholder" AR variants are supposed to be Gallente knock-offs of the other races' rifles, but that the TAR can be arguably better than what it's a copy of (the Scrambler Rifle), when instead it's supposed to be an inferior version for those who didn't spec into it. Just like the Assault Scrambler Rifle suffers from rather bad dispersion compared to the Assault Rifle. |
