I have debated this for a couple of weeks with myself wether to quit or continue on dust. After spending some cash on this game (mainly to test things and be PC ready when it dropped) I thought this was the reason I was grinding on, but have come to realise that is not the case. I will be staying simply because, as frustrating and bad this game can be at times I will be proud to say I was a part of something that may be a part of gaming history as EVE has become.
Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to say that CCP will pull it off, but if they do......this will be a monster of a game.
Honestly, I think CCP can pull it off. The part I wonder about, though, is if they will. I don't know how much money the game makes on Aurum sales, but unlike a fledgling Eve that could live on small subscription numbers, Dust doesn't have any subscribers generating income, so without the revenue stream, I wonder how long CCP will hemorrhage money on Dust before packing it up.
The Dust experience--I mean developing Dust and seeing it grow from its infancy--is amazing. It makes me wonder what it would have been like if I had subscribed to Eve back in 2003. I wonder if it had similar growing pains that Dust is experiencing now, and if it did, CCP has been down that hole before and knows the way out.
Dust can be great. CCP could pull it off and have a huge success here after Dust really gets out of Beta. Much of the angst I see about weapon imbalances, etc., are the result of many of these things being balanced at the highest level, and since everyone is relatively new and still skilling up, people aren't at the highest levels yet. I'm sure many of the issues will smooth out as people have more average sp. I can speak for me personally, but I feel much more effective with all Advanced gear than I did in starter or Meta 1 gear.
Sure, there's some tweaks to be done for balancing, and new dropsuits and weapons to introduce. It is an ongoing process. But CCP, if they stick with it and see it through, could have a great success with Dust. The game is a long-term model, like Eve, so if we can survive out of infancy and into the longer-term game, we're all in for a wild ride. |
