Hello there! I'm a relatively new player on Dust 514 (about 2-3 weeks) but I found out stuff that missed, or should be changed.
First of all, in term of equipment, there are a few things that are missing.
-Smoke grenades: Those things are really important in any tactical FPS game, and I believe it would really change things up on Dust. Why? Well, for example, when trying to capture a point, it's not normal that a sniper can deny a whole squad to capture it. Throw a smoke grenade there, and capture it. It would be useful to medics, as well. There's someone dying on the floor, in the crossfire? Throw a smoke, an try to get him. There's a tank blocking the street? Throw a smoke in front of it, and cross the street (or anything similar).
-Grappling hooks: I found out, on Dust 514, that a lot of people uses dropships to get on high grounds, then just dominate the map. For the enemy team, if they have no dropship, it's impossible for them to reach such spots. I suggest to give them another option than a new dropship. Grappling hooks would work perfectly, and in my opinion, it would take either an equipment slot, or a sidearm slot. Why a sidearm? To force people to think twice before taking one (so that not everybody has one). Then you could make it possible, at the advanced or prototype level, that another person could join them on their grappling hook.
-Jetpacks: If you dislike the grappling hooks idea, I'd suggest this one, but personally, I'd make it part of a new light suit, so that you couldn't see a heavy with a jetpack. It would be an advantage to reach high spots, or just be quicker instead of having to find the stairs and climb them. That way, those light units could reach objectives quicker (but would lack armor to really fight off people if they were trying to kill him). I'd suggest making jetpacks fuel something similar to ammo, thus you can't just spam it too much, or you run out quickly. Though I'd suggest a version that has regenerative fuel, but would last less longer, or something similar.
Second of all, I'd suggest new vehicles.
-APC: It'd be great to have a medium-armor, transport troop vehicle, with something like an anti-infantry turret on the top (modifiable, to change it to an AA gun, for example, to deal with the second vehicle I'd be suggesting). Sure, dropships are nice, but on certain maps, or under certain conditions, sometimes it's prerferrable to have something more tanky, on the ground, so that preying eyes will spot it less easily. There's no ground transport at all, except the LHV, but they are only 3 places big. It'd be great to have an APC with something like 7-9 places (pilot + transport), so that you could transport whole squads at the same time. It would really quicken certain maps, and make it so that squads are not getting owned on plain maps with tons of hidden snipers.
-Gunship: Eve Online is known for its quantity of spaceships, yet on Dust 514, there's only the dropship. In my opinion, it makes no sense. It lacks the big 2-places gunship, made to destroy other vehicles, but not troops. It would give out real nice air battles, and would give them a team an edge on the tanks (except those with missile-launchers and the like). The game really lacks anti-vehicle airships, in my opinion. It would give a heavy-armored flying unit to the game (drivable by players, I mean)
Third of all, there are a few changes that should be made to one weapon I believe that is too strong, in an unrealistic way.
-Mass drivers: Those guns are "stupidly" made. Let me explain: In reality, grenade launchers are not made so that their projectiles explode under 50 meters (if I remember correctly). Why? Safety issue. Imagine the soldier missfiring and killing his whole squad with a grenade, because he'd hit a ledge he did not see? Or he forgot to put the security on his gun, and blew his feet along with his squadmates' feet? I believe the same "security issue" should be active on Dust 514, even if there's no friendly fire. I'd suggest making it so that under 20-30 meters, the projectiles don't explode. They'd be still used as mortars (the range would probably have to be raised some), while making them not the anti-infantry choice for any close quarter combats. I'd suggest, though, to make the projectiles bounce under that 20-30 meters, so that it would make them reach spots that conventional weapons can't reach, such as hidden spots for uplinks or snipers, giving them a big tactical advantage, which would keep people from just trashing their gun after those changes.
Fourth of all, I believe the game lacks a few maps and game-modes.
-Capture the flag (or enemy intel): There are many futuristic games that still use that concept without making it unrealistic, and I believe a lot of people on Dust 514 would really enjoy that game-mode. Domination, Ambush, and Skirmish are really great, but having a fourth game-play mode would be really great. I could suggest many other game-modes, but that one would be the one, I believe, would be the most popular, and Eve Online-wise, it could be to capture other corp's intels on their fleet movements, or even intel on their resources.
-Moon map: Galaxies often possess gas planet, on which it's impossible to walk, but possess resources really useful. What I'd suggest would be assaults on moons around those planets, because they are the key foothold of those planets. It would be low-gravity maps (tons of FPS players love low-gravity maps), and would be made of dunes and craters, which would make driving LHV and tanks much funnier. With installations on the moon, it would be similar to normal maps, but with low-gravity, and a different ambiance and envrionnement. |

Other things I thought about:
-Squad numbers: I think everyone in the squad should have a number, like 1 for the squad leader, and then 2 to 6 for the rest, and add those numbers to their dot on the mini-map. Why? It would be easier to spot who's close, and if you set the number 2 to be the medic, for example, you could know when he's close and all that.
-Voice commands: It would be nice to have an option to say things to your squad through voice commands. Why? Not everybody has a microphone, and when people talk to them via the voice, they can't really answer in any way, except jumping, or opening the squad menu and typing it, which is not practical. It would give them an option to answer, and if you were to add the squad numbers, voice commands could be used to say "follow number 2" or things like that.
-Voice chat in between Squad leaders: Having a second button for squad leaders to talk to each others would be really useful to be able to make plans together. That is one of the biggest problems I've seen in matches, the squads rarely work together, since they have no way of communicating, except if everybody were to activate voice on the team channel, which is not practical either. In a tactical game like Dust 514, it would be a massive tactical tool to be able to coordonate squads to do actions together. |
