When I am alert and staring out of a drop suit, I am the Alpha.
When I am awake but staring out of these organically grown eyeballs, I am the Omega.
There are about 20 clones of me, sleeping dreaming and waiting somewhere between Alpha and Omega
The scientists and cloning experts have reassured me that when one of my clones is awake none of the others can be.
The scientists and clone experts will tell me anything they can think up if they believe it will prevent me from killing them.
They've told me in the past that the Voice in my head urging me to rip and tear flesh from bone was not my voice.
They told me this was a temporary gig and that I could keep the implant. They'll say anything, I tell ya. Especially after that one time I stopped listening to them and started listening to the Voice.
There is a queue...a line, a waiting list of clones. Because they're all alive but most of them are hanging in this technological monstrosity that keeps them warm and ready. The machine is tied to the emissions from my cerebral implant. It receives a constant feed of data (the clone keeping rig) from the implant ( buried deep in my brain where my hippocampus once was).
The data feed is my life. I am told that the queued clones sleep and dream this feed. They all "live" my life. And every time "I" die the clone at the front of the line wakes up filled to the brim with knowledge, awareness and memory of everything that led up to that moment. That's what I am told.
So, my life is what the Alpha experiences in battle and in MercQuarters and throughout the New Eden cluster. And each clone in the line dreams that life until its thier moment to wake up and live it themselves.
But the clone at the end of the line, the Omega...that clone feels another data feed. Far enough down the queue for the fastest and most reliable data transmission to be not as essential, this clone listens to sights and watches sounds across the Ether.
The Omega lives another life...in a world gone mad. Stuck on a single planet eons in the past with all of humanity struggling to survive. Omega knows ancient technology. Internal combustion, black powder, paper books, simple things.
When I am not aware of New Eden I am Omega. The dreamer. When I am awake I am immortal, Alpha. |
