The battle Academy is crap. It does not teach new players a damn thing except that the guy trying to open the wall in the MCC is probably not going to last long, because you are riding the special bus.
DUST University, Goonfeet, and many others have new player training instruction that the elite KD hosers cannot be bothered with. Each one has different entry criteria and standards. But they embody the correct way of teaching new players to enjoy DUST 514.
You get a damn vet to teach the newbies the ropes. I taught quite a few goons, and once or twice I have taken pity on a random pubbie and taught him to suck less so I could have yet another lemming to feed to my HMG over the long-term.
But bluntly segregating new players from the shark tank is NOT condusive to learning. It's the kind of lesson that burns when you pee after an ill-thought out night drinking and deciding a condom was unnecessary.
But there is no incentive to take a new player under your wing. What would appeal to your average merc? How do you convince him to train his competition?
You appeal to his Greed.
"And Breakin Stuff didst look down from on high and speak his holy word... DUH!"
first up incentivize new players (anyone with less than half your SP is a new player) to join squads and put up with crap from vets. You give the new players a 25% increase to active SP while squadded with one or two veterans. He should also gain a 25% bonus to ISK earned. Why? Because you want his greedy little ass salivating over the idea of going in and learning.
You could also use the recruit rewards as incentive. A designated training squad war points count towards earning recruit dropsuits, battle rifles, etc. Since you know, most people don't get picked up through recruit-a-friend.
On the part of the vets? give a 5% bonus per newb who is at 40% or LESS of his SP total. Let the recruit warpoints rack up and earn him things like the recruiter BPO rewards, so there are multiple avenues to the rewards. Hell, make new ones just for people who take the time to teach new players. Hell make up new rewards for trainers.
The idea is that the better the recruits do (you count the recruits' warpoints for this, not the veteran's) the greater the rewards the vet gets, because he's doing something right. The greater the gap, the greater the reward. also add a little to SP and ISK gain.
Not everyone has the patience to put up with new players and their enthusiastic, though ill-thought out queries and stupid maneuvers. To avoid abuse on the Veteran's part, encourage new players to leave crappy Squad leaders. Encourage and incentivize newbies getting into voice chat early.
it's not like it's horrifically convenient to multibox an FPS, so you're not going to see like in EVE with four people under control of the same player. Your corps will benefit, new players will benefit, and the people who can be patient and teach newbies how to excel will benefit.
TL;DR time: Quit segregating the newbs, give the damn vets a reason to train the newbs and suddenly the new player experience sucks a whole lot less. Might help player retention. |

While I don't think there should be an end to segregating the noobs (at least until MUCH better match making is in) I do think we need a way to incentives noobs and vets to mingle. Being able to select someone as your recruiter in game would go a long way towards this, and would help get the recruiter awards out into the wild. |

I was trained by the captains in my corp, and I have tried to help new players where I can, I just enjoy making them function better:) |
