(I'm sorry, no TL;DR option) First of all, even if you're gonna read the word "respec" in this thread, this is not a silly "respec thread", I'm not whining, QQing or anything, I will accept my faith and go on, but I think that what happened to me can be taken as example to possibly "change" something in the game and especially help new players. If you agree with the following, I will make a more detailed version to post in feedback/requests. I care about what the "good forumers" (I know someone is still here) think before making this request officially.
I started to play DUST 2 months and 1 week ago. DUST is a bit complicated as you start and even if I was "smart" enough to move my first steps all alone and choose my first skills, I needed advice and asked questions several times. Those answers and suggestions certainly influenced my choices. I've noticed that many times people recommend to start with something versatile and easy to use: You get your first AR, your first Nanohive, etc... It's ok, it's some good advice and let you be efficient on the battlefield even with poor equipment. But of course it takes your first 500.000 SP away.
The most atonishing thing is the crazy amount of equipment/items in this game. Of course I love this, but it takes an insane amount of time to try everything... and there's more: you might even dislike something at your first attempt, simply because your MLT version sucks. You can't put your SP into (let's say) Scrambler Rifles just because you want to try them or just try the Assault Version (level 4!). This happened to me too. Right now I'm still not 100% sure I had a reliable feel of EVERYTHING in the game, but I definitely found what I enjoy the most. Too late.
Time ago I didn't like vehicles. Of course I tried them, though. I remember my first time calling a MLT tank, it got blown up after 10 seconds, I was shocked! I tried that 4 or 5 more times and I said something like "screw tanks!". I couldn't really insist, I was running out of ISK, DUST is forbidding about experimenting new stuff.
Well, I'm not sure HOW that actually happened, but I ended up with a strange desire of putting some time and effort to have a decent match in a tank. I tried everything and in the end I found out what kind of fitting helps me the most and I had my very first "tank ownage" with a 100% MLT Sica. Guys, I fell in love. I know Tanking is crap sometimes, you get destroyed by AV, but you know what? I really love it.
So, where's the problem? I got 2 major problems right now:
1) DUST starts all over again for me. I know I have a decent dropsuit right now, so I'm not starting from 0, but I swear I would give away my complex shield extenders and all that crap right now, if I had the chance, and get a decent Gunnlogi. Assault is boring, AR are boring (I still like pretty much the Tac AR, but it's always the same), I don't have that desire and that "magic" I felt at the beginning to play on and on and on just to get what I like. I'm still grateful to the people that helped me, but now I can see that nice shiny shield suit in my armchair is not what I want from this game.
2) My experiments sucked my ISK away. Tanking is extremely expensive for a noob, your tank is weak and you don't really know how to drive it. I'm getting so much better as a Tanker, I know how to keep it safe and avoid danger (generally), but a huge part of my ISK is gone for this cause. I have no regrets. it was necessary. But... you know, lol.
So, since I'm not enjoying playing my specialized class right now, I would grind some passive SP to get a better Tank, but I wouldn't have enough ISK to purchase the related skills... and the tank. It's a difficult moment and I don't know what I should do...
FINAL POINT: I know many players abused of respecs to get OP stuff and speccing in the FOTM and I believe it's right they have to face the consequences of their actions, but I also think that not everyone had a chance to respec. I never had this chance. My friends I brought here never had this chance. I think it would be extremely good for "newish" players like me to had a "respec" option that works ONLY ONE TIME. Once you hit the button, it is forever gone. If I'm not mistaking, this possible feature would be for players who joined DUST during uprising 1.1 or later. I'm sure it would be "RIGHT" for us to have that chance as well.
What do you guys think about it? (Sorry for my shabby English, I did my best to make a comprehensive thread)

I think you have expressed the frustrations of many mercs, i do some what agree there is just so much info for new players to ingest that they are left abit dazzled, when all they want is to shoot stuff and this leads to wasting SP on stuff you find out later you don't need or at least that's the experience I had when I first started out, but as you yourself have said what is done is done, unfortunately you have lucked out this time . |

Yes, the ISK associated with experimentation can be downright cost-prohibitive, which is why Aurum exists. The easiest way to test wepons is to drop a couple quarters in your PS3 and devote some time to te basic level AUR gear with no skill requirements. Don't buy the bundles, you'll never need that many copies of weapons you're just experimenting with. You can accomplish this with dropsuits and modules just as easily. As a matter of fact, this is how I experimented with piloting vehicles early in the Uprising build, as well as discovered my true calling in DUST as a waddling fatty. These are both ventures that ISK sinks kept me away from early on, and I'm glad I tried some variety.
It may end up costing a few bucks, but I thought it was certainly worth it. |
