Hey everyone. I'm Neo Delta. I'm a new player in Dust 514. Well, I played in beta for a bit, but that was forever ago. Anyway, I just got out of the Battle Academy that they keep modifying and I want to be a tank pilot. Sadly, the quick paced nature of New Eden confuses me. Would anyone mind telling me where I should start as far as tank piloting goes? The guides don't really recommend ways for rookies to start off. I haven't bought any items or skills and i'm currently running with the starter blueprint stuff. I've done my homework though, and know quite alot about the game already. Thanks. |

I would say stick to infantry for now maybe save up skills for tanks because currently they're pretty bad and you need squad support and very expensive fitting to survive for even a few minutes. Besides that I suggest you join Dust University which is a training corp which will show you the ropes and the check the Training Grounds sub forum for more useful information. |

You say that tanks are bad, can you explain? I've seen videos of tank pilots who never die and were racking up kills. |

starting off in a tank is a good way to go broke. also, most tank pilots are mostly useless... so... i'd get 15 million sp into my main suit before i started working on tanks.

Well then, I suppose I can be an assault focused merc with an AR and SMG with shield-tanking (Caldari FTW) . What modules should I focus on?

Neo Delta wrote:You say that tanks are bad, can you explain? I've seen videos of tank pilots who never die and were racking up kills. To get to the stage of being survivable under fire with modules running you require a good bulk of SP into vehicle skills. It also necessitates playing smart when anyone pulls out half-decent AV. A good tank can run you in the region of 2 million ISK per tank, that means having to have your tank survive on average 8 games just to break even.
Fact is the presence of good AV can restrict a tanker's movement even if they don't destroy them. An acute awareness of where AV is or is likely to be is vital so you can work out what terrain provides cover and escape routes. Sometimes AV presence will just be too strong to allow you to operate in any capacity useful to your team.
Being in close communication with a squad goes a long, long way. Sharing intel lets you all do your thing better and having infantry who can restrict the enemy's movement makes predicting AV easier. Snipers and scouts/assaults can also be far better suited to taking out troublesome AV than you are. Such assistance is by far the best way to make aggressive pushing on certain points viable instead of suicidal.

Listen to this guy.
It doesn't have to be 15 mil SP but your SP should be high enough that it is possible to kill and survive which in my opinion is around the 5 mil range for casual gamers. My heavy gear didn't start paying off in the old build until 7 mil SP.
While I generally don't try to encourage the following you may want to take up the horrible red line sniping. Get smart and the profit margins are good. Also if you can thrive in a scout suit then you are one step closer to getting into the upcoming pilot suits.
You can also make decent money running behind an experienced squad and doing logi work.

Been running a madruger since 1 mill SP. Now I am over 7 and I have loved every min. Used to go 5-10 kills for every tank, now I go 40+. For every tank... I'd say infantry was way more of a hobby for me. |

I think the key is to start setting aside some ISK and SP for a tank while focusing on your gear. I'd say since you want to be a shieldtanker with an AR then to get at least a GEK and an ADV caldari suit and then start saving your SP to put into tanks. But I can't stress enough how important it is to join a corp preferably Dust Uni. They'll teach you some skills and then once you have those down you can stay and start helping others or move onto a different corp if you want.
I'm not sure Dust Uni has any who tanks but it won't hurt to ask. |

don't let them steer you away from tanking
there's plenty of chat channels and players that tank that can help you with your build
since you played closed beta do you have passive skill points built up? if so you should be around 5-6 mill
thats a good starting point but if you sink it into dropsuits that just puts you further away from tanking
also you wont get the practice you need for tanking
taking cover, module use, learning the maps, knowing when to advance and when not to
also on your ladder to building your tank you can build some pretty badass logi lav's
your gonna need alot of isk so keep wearing those starter fits in public matches and save all you can |

I'm not steering him away from tanking I'm just encouraging to get some infantry skill while he gains a bit more SP and learns a little more about tanking. That's what I'm doing right now :/ |

While you're starting out (with no SP invested) you can try out these Militia tanks. They're not great compared to standard variants, but they're relatively survivable (for Militia), and more importantly, cheap compared to the 1-2mil regular tanks can cost you.
Having said that, pretty much any AV'ers will be able to put some serious hurt on you. But learning when to run, when to fight and how to move around maps will be invaluable if you're planning on going the Tanking route. Be ready to loose a lot of your first tanks with little return, but that'd be true for pretty much any role you're starting out in. |
