DISCLAIMER: By no means am I implying the AR is OP.
As you all may know by being forum visitors, a good portion of forum goers have come to the conclusion that the AR is OP. I disagree that the AR is OP, but there is something about it that really draws a player to it, something that makes it truly shine in comparison to the other weapons of DUST, something that is built into its skill tree that can become quite a deadly combo.
Sharpshooter and Proficiency
The AR is a solid weapon and has a decent ROF along with a very nice damage output. As long as one doesn't keep R1 depressed the entire time during an engagement, they can kill an enemy rather quickly. The fact that if R1 is held for too long the dispersion increases is what keeps the AR from being a laser beam of encapsulated plasma round terror.
In steps Sharpshooter.
Sharpshooter decreases the dispersion on the AR letting a player fire a longer burst without the fear of their rounds beginning to "spread" off target. I simply have level II in sharpshooter for the AR's, and it has nigh no spread (IE, headshots are a breeze).
In steps Proficiency.
Proficiency increases the damage of your weapon and if leveled to V, grants 15% extra damage to the already rather powerful AR.
The problem
With Sharpshooter and Proficiency specced into, the AR becomes what I said earlier - "a laser beam of encapsulated plasma round terror." The player will then have a weapon with essentially no spread and will hit as hard as a Mack truck.
A weapon should not both be hyper accurate and hyper lethal - one must be sacrificed in lieu of the other.
Possible Solutions
If you look at the Scrambler Rifle Skill Tree, it lacks the sharpshooter skill. The SCR being the Amarr racial variant of an AR, one might think it should have the same skill tree as the AR but it does not. A possible solution would be to remove either sharpshooter or proficiency from the AR skill tree (have the officer AR's unlocked and AR V instead). If either or was removed then the AR would either be "hyper lethal" (with proficiency) but bad spread, or "hyper accurate" (with sharpshooter) and with average lethality.
The ability to have both sharphooter and proficiency specced into for the AR's creates a huge draw to them and has led to their OVERUSE, but DOES NOT make them OP. |

Does it suck to get killed by them?yes, but it also sucks to get killed by a nova knife minja so whateves.
Just start spooling the tears for the railrifle okay?
You have quite a bit of angst bottled up don't you? |

I've heard it defended by saying 'oh, it's a big SP sink'. But that's no defense. I bet some people wish a lot of other weapons had similar skills that they could dump SP into to make their primary weapon better. Like I bet Laser users wish they had and 'Overheat Reduction' Skill to dump SP into and become more effective. The way it stands right now, ARs just have an extra skill over every other light weapon, and that's not really fair or balanced.
I'd love a sharpshooter skill in the Scrambler Rifles (my preferred weapons) to help with the assault variants of the rifle. Perhaps a skill that lessens the charge shot time on the semi auto scrambler rifles?
The more you look at it, the more you realize that the sharpshooter and proficiency skill combo for the AR is a very enticing mix of skill sets. |

VonSpliff wrote:Hmm, try shooting the Douvalle Ar. That mofo spreads everywhere. Only the gek and the BPO rifle have little to no dessperssion. And it does not matter with the bpo if your spec'ed into SS. I've posted this several time and so has others. So stop your QQ, and go hide in the redline if you don't want to be shot. VonSpliff, Merc
You know, I was going to state some arguments and some other points and factors pertaining to the AR in response to your post but frankly I'm not in the mood to beat you over the head with an intelligent well thought out rebuttal (look it up).
I'm currently at work on a Friday and am burnt out - feel free to carry on with your assumptions and allegations of QQ. |
