I'm trying to determine what the optimal range on this thing is, but it's extremely difficult to do in the middle of combat. Help? |

When using the laser rifle, you'll be equally equipped if you used a pistol that shot confetti. I'm waiting for the death rave party to start dancing to the songs of murder once more. |

Compare optimal ranges with this chart.
Laser rifle optimal is 65-85 I believe. Outside of that past 85 its efficiency drops FAST. What I do is find people at or just a bit beyond that middle circle in my minimap because it is the 50m mark. Then I back up a bit and let fire. |

When you aim at an enemy you can see an info below it in the HUD. You'll see shields/armor, range and efficiency %. When aiming try to get that number no greater than 80m, which is the Laser Rifle optimal range. You're using Amarr assault right?

I've read that before...but for me it only works on teammates and never on reds. Halp? |

It does, but after about 100m you won't be able to see it. That's when you know damage will be crap.

Haha, unfortunately no. Gallente scout. Is the Amarr assault really worth investing all the points into a new suit for?
I usually like to lure people out by running away from them. I don't think that would work so well on an assault suit. *crosses fingers for Amarr scout* |

My best advice for you would be
1. Don't listen to all the people who say the LR is useless, they obviously have no clue what they're talking about.
2. Don't worry so much about the numbers and such. Yeah you can know that the laser rifles efficiency is somewhere hidden between 50 and 100 meters roughly, and you can pin it down to exactly 65-85 meters and carefully map the distances on your radar and with target intel, but that's a lot of extra work. You're best bet is to simply go out there and start firing at people and get a good feel for how far away you need to be, how small the enemies look, how much they should cover up your sights. You may die a lot initially in the process, but having a good feel for the weapon is a lot more important than knowing the numbers.
3. You may already know this, but pre-heat when you can. Fire off target (preferably at something close so no one can notice you're pre-heating) and let loose. It is also beneficial to intentionally overheat once so you know exactly how much wiggle room you have.

I think I remember a scout with a laser in the battlefield, lol. Weird combination...you should get the Amarr assault if you really like the gun. With overheat reduction bonus you can fire the laser for longer time before overheat which = more damage.

I disagree, I think you can run a standard laser rifle with no damage mods on a non-Amarr assault suit and still be deadly. I believe this because I've done it. That said, I do believe the Amarr assault suit's bonus is incredibly valuable and well worth any amount of skill points, but again by no means necessary.
When I use the laser rifle, it is usually from a defensive position so I'm not moving much and the speed doesn't bother me. However, I have got in one situation where someone sneaked up on me while I was lasering in the Orbital Artillery outpost. I ran away the best I could and went to that long underground passage way, turned around, and was at perfect distance to laser my poacher. Definitely made me feel like the laser rifle may have some hidden potential when combined with speed, so good luck with that! |

Thanks. Yeah, I noticed that when I can actually fight people in the LR's optimal range it's actually quite good. Finding that optimal range is living hell, though. I guess that I'll need to survive a few more games using this thing before I can actually get a real feel for what I can and can't fight.
3. I like the idea, but the laser rifle tip that occasionally appears on the loading screens indicates that the power of the LR is based on continuous fire, rather than the heat level. Is it the heat level? Have you tested this out?

Okay. I will go for that next, then.
Gah. I've spent most of my SP in tanks. Getting back to infantry is a bit painful. So much to get, but at the cost of so much SP.... |

You are correct, it is based off continuous fire, not heat level. I suppose the popular term "pre-heating" is a bit of a misnomer. What I mean by that is fire off target and then, without letting go of R1, move the laser over your enemy. If you start firing at them initially when you hit R1 the damage rate isn't going to be that high and they may be able to escape, only do that if your target is out in the open. Otherwise, "pre-heat" your weapon and they will have much less time to react. |

^It's continuous fire, that's why Amarr makes it powerful. The optimal range is 80m, just look at HUD everytime you aim down the sights at someone.

Edit: I know damned well that there's an optimal range for this thing at which it absolutely wrecks faces. I'm just not sure what that range is and I'd like help finding it.
40-60m is the range you want, with the ability to insta-gib medium and scouts around 50m. You generally want to stay in the back watching your flanks as a mid-range anti-infantry. Getting on top of high ground such as hills, roofs, against walls are perfect. Never use it in the open unless you're behind friendly infantry and can keep tabs on flanks.
If you also look on your mini-map, you'll see lines, first one is 10m, you can figure out how far is someone by watching that, and keeping tabs.
Yes it is worth training Amarr Assault to 5. The ability to shoot longer can mean the difference between killing someone and overheating. |

So another tip with the laser rifle is to always operate it with nearby cover. Not only does this provide a safety net if you overheat as well as a good place to "preheat," but also because using the laser rifle does make you a dead give-a-way and you'll need cover if you can't kill your targets quick enough. |

Seems most everything has already been answered.
The LR can get incredible damage output at long range in the correct conditions. I'd roll with Complex Damage Boosters every time with it. Warming up the laser for a second against a close object then zoning it on the head of a shieldstacked ck.0 will melt them incredibly fast, giving the weapon some capacity for high-burst assassination at a distance.
Once the new ADS with increased tracking speed is in it'll be even better for fighting several targets at once, shield-stripping and suppressing multiple opponents when used from a good vantage point.
You get an intuitive sense for range after a while, just keep in mind that from high ground targets are further away than they might appear. A rangefinder that didn't require you to be zoned in on a target would be helpful but unfortunately we don't have such a tool right now. |

I just refrenced smg's because thats my weapon of choice fits my playstyle always has
but I know quite a few guys that use the pistol as their main weapon of choice
and they do very good with it and dont forget about the critical hit bonus
