These three squads would face off against each other. Who do you think has the superior firepower? My money is on the combined arms approach with the support weapon + direct fire weapon. |

All other things being equal... ARs win.
Most adaptable in any given situation. But it depends on the tactical situation. Mixed group would win in an urban environment possibly (like attacking the letter in the "Mushroom" building). All MDs would be slaughtered outside of their niche. |

Yeah good thoughts. Makes sense when people reply to include the situations when they think each would be the best. |

AR V's MD = MD wins
The AR have not chance against the MD. The AR is a precision tool, you need to aim accurately to finish a kill quickly ... the MD is an area weapon, just shoot anywhere near you target and the splash damage will do the job for you.

Just MDs would never win in any realistic scenario, only if you force everybody into small corridors, rooms, stuff like that. In a realistic scenario the MD guys could soften targets up, which would just retreat and regenerate. You need somebody else to make the kills.
MD and AR is a good combination in CQC, urban stuff. Could win against 16 AR guys.
16 AR guys rock 16 MDs and MDs/ARs most likely, aim and kill in 2sec.

MD and AR mixed would win. Superior flexibility, and if you could co-ordinate worth a damn then you'd do much better bringing your strengths to play. |

MD > AR
In a situation where you have 8 ARs milling around in a small area then I agree. But in a general battle scenario you have people in different directions at different elevations and different ranges (all of which the AR can handle) The MDs only excel where you have your enemies clustered in a small area like an objective or a building.
Don't get me wrong, MD is a good weapon and there are situations where an MD will always be better. But going into a random engagement 8 vs 8 my money says most of the top corps would be using a majoirty of Duvolle ARs.
The upcoming tournament should be interesting in this regard to see if people try any unusual doctrines to win rather than the usual corp battle mixes we see. |

Just judging on these first few posts, you can see that there is a conversation outside of the "this gun is OP, this dude when 25/3 with it!!".
The context weapons should be balanced in is in squads. Outside of that context, analysis is skewed. I think the comments so far show that there is appropriate parity with these weapons. |

For running pub matches an all mass driver squad is pretty hilarious. For PC fights or anything else with FF switched on the all mass driver squad turns into a terrible idea fast. |

to add my oil to the fire - and it's been said above already... it has to be in a context... the AR's will absolutely dominate in open environments or hilly terrain (especially if they maintain the high ground), while MD's will dominate if it's small cramped environments with lots of turns, nooks and crannies. This is why map variety is important - as it makes some weapons shine more, while others are handicapped.

A squad that is mostly AR but with MD support would probably be the best option. The mass drivers can help clear out anybody that is in a defensible position and generally soften up the enemy in most other situations.
Pure MD would have issues in many situations but would be pretty hilarious. All AR is fine but having specialized support, such as mass drivers, swarm launchers, and snipers allows the squad to deal with more situations. |
