I'm frequently being ambushed as a scout despite my best efforts to be sneaky, so I read the game mechanics article on the wiki and was surprised that scan profile doesn't seem to work how I thought it did. So let me get this straight, and please correct me if I misunderstood:
1. Unless the opponent is aiming at you, you are completely undetectable on radar at any distance if you are attacking a heavier class of dropsuit than your own.
2. If the opponent aims at you, you show up on radar regardless of precision/profile difference.
3. Passive scanning doesn't make a lick of difference in practice, since the radius of passive detection without amplifiers is only about 10m (the distance you can walk in about two seconds), hardly enough to be a threat to anyone.
3. Therefore the scan dampener isn't useful at the expense of other low power modules. Whether you have a profile of 1 or 100, being even 11m away from someone without scan amplifiers would make you undetectable unless they are looking at you. That's practically point blank range anyway.
4. Scan radius modules aren't useful. Even if the opponent had a hundred percent bonus to scan radius (giving them a whopping 20m passive scan), you could easily gun them down from many times that distance or be outside that radius altogether.
5. Scan precision does squat, since it only takes effect within that tiny scan radius.
6. Nearly all my deaths have been purely visual, having nothing to do with profile. The 400k of skill points I put into dampening didn't help my stealthiness at all.

It's getting a big overhaul in 1.4 (?) that is actually supposed to make it worth the investments into precision/range modules. But it's mildly sucky now. I have converted, to believing in a sense that it does work but god forbid a sniper have his scope near you. |

- Profile Dampening effects Active Scanners as well, but you would probably need to be in a scout suit to begin with to get your profiles down enough to hide from one.
- A Gallenti Scout can probably get the range pushed out enough to be useful. It would make flanking easier if you knew if the guy around the corner was facing your way or facing away from you.
- 10 m is a lot better than the 2m (Assault) and 5m (Scout) that they originally intended.
- I have seen enemy snipers setup 5m from my sniping position without knowing that I am there thanks to a few points in Profile dampening.
- Nice to be able to get closer than 10m to execute a Sniper without showing up on their radar.
Overall, not useless, but maybe a bit underwhelming currently. It will be interesting to see what happens in 1.4. |
