Dropships are aerial vehicles that are in transporting troops around the battlefield, that's the first thing we need to remember, they are not gunships, they are not fighter craft nor are they bombers, they are troop transport vehicles. Where did CCP go wrong with Dropships? They treated them as a combat vehicle and always balanced them around that.
I believe they should only be two types of Dropship, a Heavy and a Light Variant. Forget the Logistics/Assault/Bomber variants, they're a waste of time. Not only should there be just two variants, but both of these should lose their weaponry, now before I hear "BUT IRL WE HAVE TRANSPORT VEHICLES WITH GUNS ON IT" I'm sorry, Mr Realism, we're capable of firing missiles at eachother from across the world, yet my missiles disappear after 200m, so forget your realism, it has no place here.
The variants
Light:
The Light Dropship is a fast moving vehicle. It loses a fair amount of Armor and Shield in exchange for being fast and maneuverable. For ideas about its speed and such, think a little bit faster than the Assault Dropship. It carries four passengers.
Heavy:
The Heavy Dropship is a slow moving vehicle, it sacrifices speed for heavy tank. It is very resilient and capable of tanking a large amount of damage (It has the PG/CPU of a HAV for example, so it can fit proper reps). It can carry 8 Passengers.

By creating weaponless Dropships, you create true transport vehicles and can be reasonably balanced against other vehicles and AV, because then we can buff them without worrying too much about Dropships becoming gamebreakingly overpowered.
I personally hate the Assault/Bomber variants of the Dropship, I feel angry at the fact CCP are just giving us these without any effort, rather than add a Gunship, they give us an Assault Dropship, rather than a Bomber aircraft, they give us a Bomber Dropship, and what's worse? Everyone thinks they've done something great, no, CCP haven't. Stop fooling yourselves into believing these are good things, they are merely a distraction so we don't ask about the proper vehicles.
If CCP had instead, created proper skills for them, but used a temporary Dropship model, I'd be alright with that, it would make sense to me. Skill into Gunships, get access to the "Modified Assault Dropship", a Level 1 Gunship that is explained to be a Dropship with guns attached. Same with Bombers, move them to the Bomber skills, name the type of ship a "Modified Bomber Dropship". Does that not make sense?
Anyways, here's my thoughts on the Dropships.

I still hate the idea of VTOL bombers with a fiery passion, but I like the idea of more transport focused Dropships, since that's why I specced into them them in the first place back in the build before Codex.
In all honesty, I'd like to see some aerial vehicles that aren't Dropship recolors at some point, and not just Fighters, but maybe an Apache/Cobra-style Gunship. |

Why can't we also have weaponless dropships as well as the the ones we have now? Or just let us take turrets off the current ships?
The extra CPU/PG could be used to make your ship more survivable. Also, they should get a equipment slot for rep tools. |

I would like to put a small turret in place of a large on my HAV. I would also like an infantry rep module. I would also like to have a tree that grows money. |

I would like to see the Logistics dropship as an actual tanking vehicle, capable of transporting people. but we have to remember that the job of the Dropship pilot is to get mercs in AND out of the hot-zone. the dropship should not be able to fend off a large mass of people, but provide supporting fire, to allow the ground troops to get out unharmed.
removing the guns of the ship will also yield the pilot 0 Points. currently there is no way of a dropship to do his job, and still make a considerable profit. give them wp for spawns and retrieving mercs under heavy fire. then I would fit my ships for a support role myself, without limiting variants.
But hey, a thought for a thought |

Good idea but until the player count increase or bigger map sizes. You will have that pointless drop ship pilot in the air flying around in circles doing jack **** lol. At least add 1 side turret to allow suppression fire for extraction and deployment. That 1 turret can then 360* and is mounted on top or under(?) the drop ship. |

Or, we could get light Gunships?..
I don't mind them here as a temporary thing, but I firmly believe these Dropships should be separate from the Dropship Category, or even requiring Gunships Lv 1 and Dropships Lv 1, but not as it is currently.
