Shamelessly necroing previous discussion which faded a bit quickly. Reason why this is relevent being the future 1.5 update redoing the vehicle balance. As the balance, as history shows, difficult to create it doesn't hurt for CCP to have ideas and possibilities in mind.
Currently tank fittings are very tight and the winning way is to have Rep+HP Buff combined with DamaMods if possible (exception current broken 2x3xArmorReps). There's no room for special variations or qimmicky equipment.
For example, it doesn't most often make sense to fit tracking enhancers/heat dissipators/etc over DamaMods. Damamods Rule. (Currently armor tanks sometimes have spare HIs as they don't have HI armor modules, but that may change as discussion is on.)
[SUGGESTION:] Give tanks (+LAVs?) one equipment slot.
That could be fitted with, for example, the following but not limited to:
- Active Scanners - Passive Scanners - Mobile CRUs - Mobile Supply Depots - Tracking Enchancers - Range Extenders - Heat Buildup reducers - Cooldown Quickeners - Battering Rams/Meat Plows (which also clear mines) - Cap modules when capacitor is introduced Other ideas by other people here1 and here2
But there should never, EVER, be vehicle equipments which * give more HP/EHP * Give more raw damage/rof These effects should be among those closely balanced ones on hi/low slots which would mean tough decisions for fitters.
WHY? - Currently it doesn't make sense to use support modules. Heat sinks sometimes used although rare. Having more usable active modules means more choices in fitting (promotes
fitting skill) and more choices on the field (promotes gameplay skill, instead of brick going vs another brick) - Current Eq style modules are too weak to take a real HI/LO slot.
- Tanking methods are imbalanced. Most current 'equipment' modules like MCRUs, active scanners, tracking enhancers are high slot modules. Seeing any of those on a shield tank
is unlikely. So no Mobile CRU's for caldari race ever, if exaggarated a bit. I'm sure it's impractical to create low- and hi-versions of every special module.
- It's probable that creating tank balance would be easier if DEVs wouldn't have to take into account keeping equipment modules fittable in the HI/LO equation and rather focus on the biggest DPS/HP/REP balance of the tank hulls and main modules.
- Opens a possibility to specialized "logistic" tank hull
- Adds to the richness of the game if vehicles differ more from one another. More ways for tankers to support the team. More surprising situations on the field.
- To get rid of the no-brainer situation. To promote choice. The choice has been used as an argument against EQ slot suggestion. In reality EQ slots would widen both the options to choose from, and get rid of the no-brainer situation where the tanks very basic functionality would break adding current equipment modules as it just plainly is a
no-no to gimp your EHP and DPS on the battlefield of today. - Some current Eq modules could, of balance dictates, be still left to HIs or LOs.
- To have a module layer which would not be 'mandatory' to be used to buff EHP or DPS.
WHY NOT AS A RIG? Good people dismissed the idea of EQ slot in favor of a RIQ slot. In case you don't know, rigs differ a lot in Eve: - No active modules(!) - Focus on HP and DPS buffing - a sort of implant/hardwiring for the vehicle, no rig is a module - rigs by definition have a penalty included (few broken exceptions) Thematically rig won't be suitable, it's likely that if rigs are introduced then CCP has different thing in mind than just another module layer (granted that the unfittability of the rigs doesn't transfer to Dust as such).
Looking now for more feedback. Please remember that I'm not saying that current system is broken but to open up thinking to improve things. I'm also not saying all this has to happen, these are ideas given and perhaps seeding entirely new ideas by you guys.
Looking back at difficulties of vehicle vs vehicle vs AV balance, we need all cards on the table. If this is a terribad idea I have the sense to yield. |
