TL;DR at the bottom
Not all the points concern Dust, currently, but I think the main thing to understand is the stigma of F2P games have created for themselves.
Taking a look at the comment section can give you an idea of what the IGN audience thinks of F2P.
Taking a look at our forums and player counts can also give you an idea of what a large portion of the playerbase thinks of this F2P game.
It seems if CCP wants to ever achieve more than 10,000 active players online, they need to consider focusing on other outlets to monetize. Take a look at other popular F2P games and see what they have done to earn trust from their large player bases. People love to customize (probably the most noble way of monetizing) and people love skipping the grind (a slightly less noble way of monetizing). But here is the thing...
If i'm paying for active and passive boosters, it shouldn't take me 3 months to mostly max out ONE role. The last thing I want to do is pay for more boosters and start over with a new role so that in 6 months, I'll have a grand total of TWO roles. Woopee. In Dust 514, the grind is large and the content rewards are small. The only reason it takes 7 years to unlock every skill is because you held back the content behind an incredibly large grind/pay wall. NOT because you have 7 years worth of content. If you are afraid of players ditching the game after 6 months like any other COD/BF game all I have to say is this: You better start working on shelling out real MMO worthy content. To keep AUR players like me from maxing out a role then saying, "Now what..." from leaving, consider treating us a little better and actually significantly reduce the ridiculous amount of grinding we STILL have to do. Those Omega boosters should be the new standard boosters.
TL;DR: **** you it's not that long.

TBH, most commenters AND the author himself didn't even acknowledge EvE, where you can pay for game time with ISK, which skews the situation even further |

Well, EvE has built it's own little subscription/f2p unique hybrid model but it is definitely not your average F2P business model. |

For those players that paid for boosters whom are now maxed in their roles and stop paying for boosters. I have a solution. Respecs for AUR limited to once every 90 days. CCP gets more money from these players. Gets money from those like me who haven't spent a dime but would love a respec. Money from new players who finally have figured out the game and now want to spend their sp more appropriately.
Respec for AUR in 1.4! |

It is not a large proportion of the playerbase or forum users. It is a small vocal minority and their alts. |

I'm going to go ahead and take a wild guess that.... you did not read the article, you are completely oblivious to the pathetically low playerbase, and that... you are completely unaware that the vocal majority have abandoned this game

Long-term indirect monetization through EVE Plex purchases could be achieved through enabling player-created, eve-side-meaningful Dust contracts.... would create an EvE-side ISK sink and encourage plex purchase. Small, but it's a possibility. |

IGN has gotten a lot better over the years- well, it's community has at least. There is a growing hatred for fanboys and they are downvoted into oblivion. The community is getting better at calling out IGN on the bullshit fanboy war bait.
That being said, the content of this article still stands. It's one of the few good ones. |
