The commander is the leader of the clones, of whom, is setting into battle. What does the commander essentially do--is key idea.
Is there to be only two commanders in one game? In a war there is often more than one commander -- One on each opposing team, but what if there is more than one. A third or fourth commander, setting into motion espionage. A another commander trying to have a small task group to distrupt the battle for their own reasons. Rather if that rouge commander wants one team to win or the corporation who contracts to that third commander wants the asset for their self.
What does the Commander do? Will the commander be in-game or will you constantly just have to blow up the MCC ? Sitting in a room in-game on the MCC or directly on the battlefield playing in a map interface. I think it would be interesting if the enemy could just kill the commander and that would be ` all she wrote -- This places assassination inside the game... Perhaps the other team manages to get one on one with the other commander and assassinates him, giving that other commander a new ship. Perhaps a vigilante group storms into the game stealth and steals the ship, while killing the commander(Eve does have Pirates in their universe). The commander is what keeps the game rolling and if his or her death that ends the game -- How many options do we have to take that commander out? Will the commander be giving Waypoints, deploy locations, dropping in vehicles randomly, talking to a buddy on eve telling them to light the enemy up? The commander is an important role that suppose to drive or guide the battle.
Much to speculate on... I think the commander should be able to retreat the battle if taking massive loses, be assassinated, able to vacate the MCC just in case its to be blown up, and to evenly call for reinforcements.

Just posted this as a similar thread.
Now that you mention it, there is that command drop suit tab in the market. Don't even want to think about he SP needed to get into one. I would imagine it would need SP in all races suits. Ie: a BC would know all positions/roles of the team.

I read something official saying that the commanders will be placing and deploying installations to the battlefield, and that their game will be more like playing a RTS game. |

I hope they make the role of Commander require steep skill investment, so we don't get total idiots hopping in the queue to be our Commanders. I for one will be taking a break from slaughtering you all to try my hand at leading the battle. |

Thats the route i plan to take, i'll be trying the crusader suits next build as they sound very interesting and hopefully random idiots will have enough intelligence to know if they follow me around they will get very easy kills with the debuffs the suit can bring to enemy corps. |

Either way, as it may be a real time strategy for the Commander. They should be placed out in the field(They have a dropsuit) .
I hope the game doesn't only have 2 initial commanders - perbattle. I wanna see some massive corruption going on. A third Commander pops up into battle(In the middle of the essential fight), but that third/ 4th commander is hiding in a smaller, cloaked ship. An the squad that is going rogue inside their battle is setting up for both sides to fail, or is just favoring one team or trying to blow the planet up(Simply jacking with the commander's heads) .
The commanders who are initially fighting each other, can have a squad go search for the rogue MMC or just focus on the battle.
This gives the commander role more depth -- ALSO just sounds awesome... Having more then one MCC inside the battle gives the role of espionage -- Allows for assassinations, amongst many other things. |

RTS commander won't be at launch, crusader suits will be.
I expect something like EvE's command ships, full fleet can have 31 commanders, dust would need about double MAG's team size before it has command structure like that. Some of the buffs from crusader seem short range, so they will be right up there with squads.
The rts stlye commander will probably need millions of sp in command skills, and a mcc at 100million+ isk. Probably be mainly people that are good at commanding and rts will put that much effort into skill category. |

@Ten-sidhe... You should go and play a actuall RTS game. Like Command & Conquer. To really grasp what a commander does.
@Mavado -- Eve allows you to have your own corporation, but there is a massive downside to that -- You have to spend a ample amount of time making money and not pissing off ppl.
Same goes with contracts from corporations-- No one wants someone that sucks at the game; No one wants a schemer... You can possibly go completely A-wol in a game under a contract.
I wouldn't listen to any commander that is known for... Sending troops off to die... No one would follow a commander that rigs the game up.
If you all are having difficulties grasping the aspect... You should either, play a RTS game like... Command and Conquer / watch a video of it. To really understand what the role is for the commander as in that game, C&C you play as the commander.
I just want to make sure the commander isn't just the ship... Thats flakey. I wanna be able to... Storm a ship and take it. I wanna be able to assassinate the commander... Easy end game, but requiring massive ninja-ness.
I probably wont ever play a commander -- I like that style of gameplay... I just prefer shooting things.
But the commander in the game, plays a key role into game domination and the essential aspect of war-commanding. An if they put the commander in the game, it opens up a whole line of gameplay scenarios and tactics.

Just to clarify some things for some think the squad leader is the commander. The Commander of the game... IS NOT THE SQUAD leader. The Squad leader laterals organization within their squad. The Commander controls the ENTIRE ARMY.
The Commander should be able to select squads and evenly single players of the squad. The commander should be able to give orders to the squad in various of ways... From giving text commands to give way points.
That would require a recess of chat interface, which needs to be done anyway.... Because chat just eats resources in game combat.
The commander needs to have a real RTS feel and command battle movements. Giving the ability to give text orders would be great... A lot better than only microphone. Sometimes people have heavily distorted microphone that is just annoying -- Hearing a bunch of highpitch static just hurts my ears. So I usually turn off voice. Even if it is just them pointing and clicking giving a waypoint that is just a HUD icon, would be great. While a text message from the commander, that displays could lay hold the objective or REASON for way point, if the commander needs it.
The commander needs a lot of tools to communicate to his or her troops.
Also the commander should be in game, because if I get told a bunch of stupid orders that constantly have me going to my death and serve no essential purpose in moving the battle forward. I will off the commander myself. |
