Difference: Evolve has offline bots. Evolve can be played fully with just four other friends.
Talking specifically from the perspective of the consumer rather than the producer, a small player base isn't that big of a deal in a game like Evolve but is pretty significant in a game like Dust.

DUST player numbers aren't amazing, they're actually below average for F2P if memory serves me right.

Yes, but how many games can claim to atill have a significant player and fan base after effectively being canned? And then also, said game being revived due to that player base.

Why're people always trying to get this game, a game that was made for console players, to be on PC? They threw that idea at us last fanfest. You can see how well that turned out. It needs to get ported to ps4. Let that sink in

If it weren't for Rattati and really dedicated fans I can assure you we wouldn't even have half of the playerbase we have now. If it were on the PC though where CCP can perform at optimum levels they would have a comparatively better chance at improving the game without being limited by subpar hardware the ps3 has.

DUST player numbers aren't amazing, they're actually below average for F2P if memory serves me right. You're comparing a free to play game on a console to free to play games on PC. Many of those are not Free to Play but most are grizzled juggernauts. Comparing them to DUST is quite unfair as those are quite literally the most popular games on Steam. Some have upwards of 40 times more people playing them right now then DUST did at release.

If it were on the PC though where CCP can perform at optimum levels they would have a comparatively better chance at improving the game without being limited by subpar hardware the ps3 has. Most of the anger over FanFest 2014 is about lack of information. If it was announced "we are moving DUST to the PC" rather than "here is an entirely new game" and leaving questions like "what about my SP?", "What about my Aurum?", "What about my gear?" completely unanswered. Notice that is still happening. If they announced it as "we are moving to the PC. You are keeping all your stuff. We don't know when it is happening but it is going to happen" most of loathing over it would be sated.
However, I don't think the game's failure has too much to do with the console. Hardware limitations not allowing smooth framerate and stellar graphics, I can buy and let slide. Patches being slower because they go through Sony first, sure. I will even spot them "we didn't realize getting the PS3 and PC to talk would be that hard", even if it has potential to just be a scape goat for CCP's inability.
However, releasing the game with only one kind of Sentinel/Scout and still not having full racial vehicles after nearly two years has nothing to do with the PS3. Blaming the PS3 entirely for the state DUST is in is like the skinhead with teardrop tattoos saying "I would have done better at the job interview if Bill had not spilled mustard on my undershirt!"
Best case scenario is pulling a War Thunder and have both communities together. That will keep the console only people with the game and can potentially snag some EVE players, especially if the "meaningful interaction" bit happens.

You understand the average player payed 70-100 dollars for Evolve(aka, running simulator)
But then you look to think they have versions running on XBox1, PS4 and PC... and you start to understand those numbers get multiplied very quickly.
The average PC zone server for planetside 2... runs around where DUST is... 3-4k player peaks.. But those players don't sit in a lobby for a majority of the time like DUST does... They are usually on the battlefield or in the process of spawning there.
DUST has always had decent player counts... It's more what you do with them... If your seeing the same player over and over again all night in the same matches.. it becomes redundant and noticeable.. Then you start asking internally.. "Is there enough players playing this game?" Which there are... Just not utilized well. |

I'm looking at the pcu graphs, there is a noticeable change in players playing, an increase. The matchmaking is helping dust grow imo. If this continues, we might reach 5k pcu in 5 months.

In my opinion 2 things damaged dust;
1 - The game released in a terrible state receiving poor reviews across the board, 2 - Throwing newbros and vetbros in the same matches. New guys needed a proper chance to learn and understand the game without getting destroyed each match. That didnt happen until the recent matchmaking fix so players basically said screw this and moved onto other games. |

Steam does not have numbers for all player playing said game, only those using the steam client. Unless the game is steam only it cannot be counted as an exact number.
As for evolve, while the game and idea are pretty cool its surly one of those games that loses its novelty pretty quickly, like most new games these days. All 'splash' and colour and no substance.

Evolve isn't only on Steam......
It's all well and good to feel like DUST is reviving, but please, for your own sake, don't imply that it's becoming relevant to the industry in any kind of way.
Because it isn't
At all.
As for Evolve, I hit top 100 Kraken almost overnight, and set the game down because I literally feel too bad for stomping people. It's literally the only game I've ever set down because I'm doing "too" good in haha.

Game was announced for PC. Game changed to PS3 because Sony invested in game. Contract will end. Game will go back where it belongs. It belongs right next to EVE on a platform that will allow the integration of all EVE games.

It is WAY too early to tell the long term effects of matchmaking, especially because I think there are some wrinkles to iron out.
You will really need to see a few months of data to have any sort of idea, and even then there are other changes going on at the same time (PC/Raiding).
