CCP Rogue has requested some high-level feedback on Legion. Mine is below
The Starmap as the door and guide to New Eden.
I always thought that Dust players suffered from poor visibility in EVE. And so I strongly feel that it needs to be apparent from the start of each game that capsuleers, mercs (and valkarie pilots) exist and are doing stuff (tm).
Ideally this would be in the form of shared social spaces where players could meet, plan, and form the social bonds that have been proven to keep people playing. This could be a fair way off of course so some other ways that this could be presented.
- Updates on EVE and Legion activities appearing on captain/merc quarters screens.
- Item previews of Legion equipment viewable in the EVE client.
- Ships passing by the merc quarters (similar to what already happens in the EVE hanger, which is based on player activity)
- Merc warbarges present around planets and stations in EVE.
- Planetary districts viewable in planetary interaction view.
I'm a little unsure about the instant transfer mechanic. Part of what EVE feel so huge is that it takes time to get from A to B and that something can happen to you before you get there. Instantly transferring from high to null just doesn't seem right. Perhaps there should be a limit to the distance that mercs can instantly jump. Maybe an EVE player in your corp needs to pilot the warbarge to the planet in null before you can clone jump to it.
Wild PvP / The Sandbox areas where you fight other players and drones (in its first iteration) to scavenge for loot Personally I fee that DayZ has a lot to teach in how this could work successfully.
The game play needs to be tense, players should be under some sort of time pressure
- When logging into a sandbox area, you should not have any idea if there are any players there. The only way you will find out is through the noise they make (calling in vehicles) or when they shoot at you.
- Things should get progressively more dangerous, which could be due to more powerful drones appearing, or worsening weather effects. Players should not be able to just loiter.
- The number of clones you have available should be small (possibly influenced by security status or distance from home station)
- The loot needs to make sense and the built environment needs to make sense. If I am on an uninhabited planet in null. I should not be finding intact weapons and buildings. Rubble, ancient ruins, and fragments of mysterious stuff that needs further analysis makes more sense.

New ways to link with EVE
- Linking the sandbox areas with incursions. Sandbox areas in incursion areas should have Sansha drone harvesters, and successfully clearing an area should help stop an incursion.
- Planetary interaction in EVE is long overdue for an update. I think there is an opportunity for Dust players (and EVE players) to conduct some sort of disruptive game play on the surface of planets and basically poke each other in an annoying fashion.
- Boosters manufacture. EVE players are currently able to manufacture drugs that can be used to enhance various attributes (shield, speed etc), perhaps they should be able to do the same for Legion players using materials that they find on planets.
- EVE players could be able to scan down derelict stations, that merc players can then board and explore.
Legion players need to be able to decisively strike back against EVE players. Not just be a modifier. We should be a force, not a minor nuisance that is easily ignored. If you really want EVE players to take notice of the mercs, there need to be situations where mercs provide a decisive advantage.
Perhaps another way of looking at the Legion/EVE link is the kind of gameplay that each game is best at, for instance: When brute force is required, we call in the capsuleers, when subterfuge, sneaking in under the radar, and being disruptive is required, call in the mercs.
EVE's current road-map is leading towards player built stargates, mercs should be able to contribute to this process somehow. |
