What button would be used for aiming up and down?

The way things work now, you have to aim the reticle through your ship, effectively, which can make killing infantry below you rather difficult.
Also, the way they camera is set in third-person means that trying to aim up at, say, another Dropship above you in a dogfight leaves your ship completely obscuring your view, thus leading most of said fights to be a mad dash to the fight ceiling where both parties then lob missiles at each other without getting many hits until one of us gets bored and flies back down to try and actually get something done.
Flying an ADS would feel far more rewarding if I could just aim my damn turret in first-person.

Completely agree with you. When you are flying a dropship and viewing from the front of the dropship, you should be able to move camera up and own without tilting the whole damn ship ====> this would be a great help in DS piloting |
