I'm making this thread out of curiosity, how many of you dusters out there aren't in a corp and I'd like to know why, I'll start.
I see no personal benefit, corps bring nothing to the game other than ISK, while also lacking any real purpose to the players of Dust, nothing really changes once you join a corp, no new gear, no new contracts, I just can't feel for it. I also don't approve of corp-stomping, I don't car if it's happening to my team or happening to my enemies, it's just not fun in any way and alienates up and coming players. |

This IS an mmo, which means interacting with people. The interactions with friends, even enemies, is often the best part of the game. While EVE is an amazing game, playing it alone limits you in so many ways. And the main reason I have played it for four years is because of the friends I have made and played with during that time.
I view dust in the same way. While you can play it alone, that is lonely, and it limits you. Playing with corpmates and friends adds more layers to the game and thus makes it more interesting and diverse. |

I did the same thing, but somehow i still managed to get a few recruits. Mostly newberries though. I get them set up and they fly off into the universe. Sometimes they even want to come back. I think it's for the cake and punch. |

I agree with all your points, Its so easy to find friends and squad up in this game, I never have trouble finding a squad.
For alot of people they have absolutely no benefit from a corp. I mean **** its a videogame, I don't want it to be like a job I don't want anyone telling me who to squad up with and what factions to fight for, and nobody's taking my hard earned isk.
Its so easy to squuad up with a corp, I jump into a squad in battle, I have a mic and I'm a decent player so they try to recruit me, I say no. then they send me an invite to their public channel and invite me to play in the future, now I can squad up with them any time, why would I need to join their corp?
The only benefit I could see would be a new player joining a corp for training, but even training can be easily found, for example this great channel "the learning coalition" |

I find it a little Ironic here I am now a CEO and reading you post I identify completely. There was very little I liked about the DUST community and found it extremely immature compared to average EVE players.
I have been a long time player of EVE and a member of the alliance within it for years. When DUST first came out, it was a curiosity for all of the alliance members, and I am the only one among them that literally bought a PS3 just for DUST to see what it was all about.
I didn't like it at all. Hearing babies cry over the headset, little kids , etc really turned me off. The lack of professionalism compared to EVE totally stunned me, the concept of clear comms was alien to them, FC's didnt exist, I couldnt see the point of a squad leader when everyone did what they wanted any way. The whole thing was to me absurd and when I tried to explain to them how EVE tactical comms work they would be rude and say go back to EVE,
I simply put the game down and didn't touch it for nearly 6 -7 months. There was nothing about the average DUST player I wanted to be anywhere near.
Then more changes began to come in, more overtones of increased DUST and EVE integration, and my alliance started to see how DUST and EVE could be interacting in the future, and asked me to develop that angle preemptively as they knew I was a DUST player.
I didn't want to. But I said to myself, "OK, here's the deal, I'll simply recruit an existing DUST corp into the alliance and join it as a liason"...
That didn't work well, dust officers exist in a bubble that they think they are far more supreme then they really are, and couldn't understand why I needed to be in control of the contracts. When I explained that I represent a large alliance with very expensive ships and many years invested that could be comprimised, they simply didnt care.
So, I formed a corp EVE side and after a while finally met a player that not only understood , but was awesome on comms. Then another, and another.... now our growth rate is phenomenal.
As squads we make much more ISK per battle then when simply a single player joining a squad in pubs. That im sure is because we know how one another thinks, what we each tend to use and how we all fit into a squad, you dont often find that in public squads.
EVE alliance seeks mercs, join Stellar and Orbital Strategic Services today!
Let's gank Scotty.

think I've made more than 20 but this one....this is my last one.....
I may not be entitled to it...but I know the lore behind it..and this corp needs to be in Dust....and someone had to do it.....

There really is no 'real reason' to join a corp at this time. You do get new contracts though if you join a corp that does PC on a regular basis. But I find that social channels are the real reason to play DUST. It is almost like a corp except you have no liability to them. I prefer to float around and play with many different people sometimes. I put LFS in many different chats and whatever it is they are doing I will participate in. Merc and proud. I don't have time to invest into a corp. I'm not a teenager anymore. In Dust, it's actually really ******* hard to get by without a corp, because the communication system is such a ******* horrible atrocity that you can't expect any kind of coordinated effort without going into the field with people that you already know well. I really feel that I miss out on much of the game because I'm isolated from everyone else, even when joining a squad.
And that's why I play sniper.
Seriously, where has the time of "press t to chat" gone? This game supports keyboard. Why the hell can't I just type a quick message for either my team or everyone to read? Dust runs in HD. There is enough room for text messages. If you think there isn't, just remove some unnecessary bloat from the HUD. There's plenty of it. |

We have been making our own contracts. 5mil for the first to 5tanks destroyed. It was a frantic race to pop tanks. It made the game serious and fun at the same time.
We train alot of guys. Some of us have been here since the open beta or longer. There is alot of information new players need to know. We have streamlined their development. A decent corp can save you millions in isk and months of your life.
There was a time we fought good tankers. Now we just fight good tanks.

See I started a corp for fun, but someone says you cant hold a district, well some of us do not care about PC. To me PC is worthless, its an ISK sink for the most part. You use your best gear and if you corp fails to reimburse you than your out of a lot of ISK if you lose, if you win you could break even or ahead, but most of the time you are still in the red. Lag is horrible and you walk away with a bunch of worthless salvage for there is no market to trade or sell it. Join a corp for fun and not to make ISK and you will be happier.

I guess the tax rate thing may throw some people off of corps and with squad finder you don't really need a corp to grab a squad anymore. I joined my STB before either of these features existed... I needed a group where I could get a squad 99% of the time. I was leaving ZTCD and decided that I liked having a big corp behind me after putting out feelers with a number of corps I joined STB squad finder and corp tax came later, I never considered leaving because of them.
when I join a battle before I do anything I look at both teams and if it's a stomp I decline the contract and move on. there is sort of a sliding scale of player threat or perhaps to better phrase it player dedication to decide if I want to take the contract.
1) group of players from a well known corp 2) group of players from a lesser known corp 3) solo player from a well known corp 4) solo player from a lesser known corp 5) group of players from an npc corp (I assume they aren't squaded, I'm not often wrong) 6) 7) 8) 9) 10) solo player from an npc corp (truth is I probably wont read your name, unless you impress me)
players from npc corps can be good and I have nothing against players in npc corps but to me it represents a level of dedication to the game to join a player corp and dedication often translates to skill.
STB has given me no reason to leave so they have my loyalty and my gun. despite all the kind invitations that end up in my inbox

I joined two corporations, one was a small and inactive one. I liked the CEO, but I only spoke to him once. I left it for Ivory Vanguard, which was a fine corporation but I never really made friends with any of the members. I was never excluded, but I didn't share in any of their humors. I decided that I didn't want to be taxed to hang around with people I didn't really like.
Joining another corporation is not out of the question, but I would need to like the members a lot. I would need to be in love(platonically). |

Honestly? I'm in a corp, and there a few people I both like and respect there. However, I'm ready to admit that for now its just another chat channel. We'd like to go PC and maybe fight for a district, but honestly, even if we join in an alliance I can't guarantee we can field more than one or two squads in defense of that district soGǪplus there doesn't seem much to do with a district once you do get one. You can make extra clones to sell for ISK? Whoop de doo, what would I do with that much ISK that I couldn't do with the ISK I make off of Public Matches? Stock up more fits?
So, I'm in a corp but I can understand players who aren't. |

I can understand the people that choose not to be in a corp. In the beginning, I avoided it for months as I didn't think I was a good enough player to be among a corp. Then, I jumped into squads and my playing experience was a whole new world. I joined a corp after I jumped into a squad from a really well known corp (at least to me, as I've been on the losing side to them many a time). They invited me and it just wasn't fun. They were big and a few big shots were well known and played together but their newer players basically were left to their own devices. I felt abandoned and jumped into random pubs.
Then, I posted in the corps recruitment asking for a very active corp. I joined one and while the corp itself seems very quiet, the alliance is not. I find myself surrounded with good players to choose from. Every once in a while, still the small kid who I don't want to hear, but for the most part, its been a night and day difference. I have greatly improved my game, made great connections, been invited to a number of chats from the cool people I've met up with. During PC fights, our entire alliance is united. We talk, we share isk, we get squads together making sure the mix of players is going to lead us to victory.
It's absolutely refreshing and since I've joined them, I've capped out every week, something I haven't done before in my either 6+ months of playing. Right now, without this alliance and with the state of the game, I wouldn't be playing dust today.

In a corp for two reasons.
Money and Battles.
I get a paycheck, and I get regular battles and good squad-mates.
That's enough for me.

I already have a day job without needing some in-game Sergeant-Major riding my balls about needing to log in at specific times for the Srs Bizness of Interwebz Warfare because capturing districts is more important than sleep. |

Joined two corps, both had great people. One merged with another corp a week after I joined and they were going into PC. Spent alot of time waiting to squad up with everything in a state o. flux. Second corp was cool but there wasn't anyone on when I was.
Keep telling myself to join another one, but never pull the trigger. Don't want to jump corp to corp, so I'm being picky. Also with RL commitments, don't want to be a slave to two masters. Being 40 yrs old doesnt help, because there isnt a lot groups I would fit in with.
Another thing I noticed. When I was with a corp, 9/10X I was on the stomping side, which is 10x worse than being stomped due to the boredom.
Lonewolfing does suck sometimes though. You have to have your own back, and nobody uses team voice.
Great job, team. Head back to the MCC for debriefing and cocktails.
