I was thinking about mining in DUST and about how CCP might further integrate it into EVE in a way that would make (some) EVE players more interested in the interaction. Here's yet another idea for introducing mining into DUST. It's a way for capsuleers to mine for ore with less risk and effort, and for mercenaries to make (or steal) some ISK. It's also a way for DUST to contribute to EVE in more ways than POS bonuses.
First, an EVE capsuleer finds an uninhabitable planet (of which there seem to be plenty) that scans as having some promise of mineral wealth. The capsuleer launches a mobile mining platform (MMP) that descends to the planet and hovers at MCC altitudes. This also triggers a certain amount of ISK to be put in escrow to pay mercenaries for the ore (or ice?) that is recovered.
That's when a special contract pops up on the DUST side. Squads or individuals take the contract and spawn into the MMP in exactly the same way they normally spawn into an MCC. The mercs then search the map with scanners (special mining scanners, probably) to find veins and pockets of ore to mine. They then deploy a mining laser (probably a separate L-slot weapon, or maybe different mining lasers that fit H, L, and S slots with different yields) to bring the ore to the surface. Once the ore piles up, the mercs tag the pile with a beacon for pickup by a remote lifter, a sort of reverse RDV drop, from the MMP. Once the ore is away, the owner of the beacon is awarded ISK based on the amount and type of ore (the ISK is automatically split by the squad if the beacon's owner is in a squad).
At the end of the mission timer, the mission ends, the mercs are awarded the ISK they earned from mining along with SP they earned from Doing Stuff, and the MMP returns to its owner with the ore and unspent ISK.
But wait--this wouldn't be DUST or EVE if there wasn't room for griefing. Aside from the normal opportunity to kill one another, the beacons are hackable, and the pickup process takes a minute or so. If one mercenary prospector digs up and tags a pile of ore, a claim-jumper can shoot the prospector and hack the beacon so the money is credited to the claim-jumper. If there's more mayhem to be had in space, the MMP can release its cargo in the form of a jettisoned can instead of returning directly to the owner (which would let the owner seed a few planets with MMPs and then return for the ore later).
As with all ideas, there are a few details to be ironed out. SP reward calculations could be a bit weird if no one ends up shooting anybody (granting WP for scanning minerals and mining ore would be one way). A decision would have to be made as to whether other prospectors or squads would be enemies or friendlies (I suggest enemies to allow for ninja claim-jumpers). Another question is that of how much the capsuleer should pay for the ore (probably based on the current market numbers, maybe chosen by the capsuleer; I'm not a miner so I'm not the best one to ask).
As a side note, I figure that once CCP has a PvE element going there could be mining opportunities that include indigenous threats. As it stands this system might be implemented with fewer additions to the game code (I'm a coder, but not for CCP, so I'm not the best one to ask about this one, either).
DUST would contribute to EVE by offering more raw materials and resources. Capsuleers would make connections with mercenaries by offering contracts to mine ore/ice, and might even retain a group specifically for the purpose. DUST would have a new game mode that encourages teamwork: You can't mine and watch for claim-jumpers or griefing yahoos at the same time, so you're going to want friends to watch your back and help defend your claims while they're picked up. Both sides of the game get a new way to cooperate, and a new way to feel like they're part of a bigger universe. |

I should also mention the possibility of the extra equipment and skills to be added to the lists. On the down side, it creates more options that players would have to choose from. On the up side, it creates more options for players to choose from. So yeah. |

How about instead they do what they are already intending to do with planetary conquest mechanics and harvesting materials needed for new item production like implants for EVE. Then The EVE pilots would want to support the DUST mercs to hold a district or more on a planet to harvest the needed stuff for use in manufacturing implants. No need to bore the hell out of DUST players with a "mining for gold" mechanic. After all, all those facilities that we are fighting around on the maps are already there doing some kind of this stuff to begin with. Those pipes aren't there for looks, they transport material for EVE (in theory). And all of it is run by no-clone normal people who are all evacuated prior to a DUST merc engagement. Hell those doors on buildings that you cannot open possibly lead to shelters where they are hiding until the fighting ends.

It shouldn't be economical to pay mercenary wages to VERY expensive clones to do grunt labor like mining.
Next they will be hiring CEOs to take dictation? |

That's a fair point that I hadn't considered.
Perhaps the mining in question is normally out of reach because of a combination of hazardous environment that dropsuits can survive and the need for intelligent decision-making on the ground obviating the use of drones.
As for the clones themselves, perhaps they could be drawn from corporate stocks, or maybe Outer Ring Excavations has its own clone-producing facilities specifically for mining use (that they offer for a small percentage of the take, of course). |

That will be great when it's implemented.
Although it wouldn't offer any new game modes for DUST. |

Make the mining laser a turret type, and have them come in small, medium, and large. With larger yields for large lasers. They could be fitted to LAVs, HAVGÇÖs or Dropships. Tankers would have to decide whether to give up their big gun to get bigger yields.
For people not familiar with EVE, mining lasers are sort of a combination of laser and tractor beam, so the minerals get vaporized, then sucked in for processing.
Hand/Eye coordination cannot be taught. For everything else, there is the Learning Coalition.

Thanks for the explanation. I was wondering how a weapon was supposed to do anything other than destroy the desired mineral.
Of course that would only work for elements and compounds that aren't destroyed by heat. |

I believe SoxFour(don't know if it was him exactly) said that they don't want Dust 514 players just farming resources(lol PC tho) so how about we allow for capsuleers to dig into our privately owned land for resources at a price? Call it a contract and we set up the price of digging and the time-frame in which they can dig(if we're limiting it to a time frame.
We get paid, they get what they want. It's all good in the neighborhood. And not only that but it also promotes having an EVEside connection for corporations and alliances other than your OBs or better yet, your connection helps defend your district to keep their supplies coming by buying OBs and dropping them
Having someone constantly buy resources from you that they craft and sell makes a lucrative structure. You could also do it within corporation or alliance and build a trading empire.
I'm sure this idea has come up before but I just can't imagine the flaws that come along with it. It doesn't break lore and it actually requires capsuleers since we, as mercenaries, don't own mining ships.

FPS and FarmVille don't really mix very well. There is no risk for the reward and mining/farming is an extremely dull occupation for an immortal mercenary.
On the other hand PvE contracts against drone infestations would fit right in. |

There's risk if some of the participants aren't mining or farming, but practicing banditry. Mining/farming under fire is an extremely non-dull occupation for an immortal mercenary, ne?
I suppose that could be something that could be set up as part of the contract structure, if necessary. |
