I noticed this quite strongly, but my theory is this: More people actually play to try the update, meaning less AFK / inactive players, the game can't handle it, framerate goes down, and the result is all kinds of aiming issues and choppy movement...

Yeah seems fine to me too. It's super focused, so this should really help to get used to the basics of the game. The only problem is, that the shock when leaving Academy is going to be even bigger now. Suddenly everything is thrown onto you.
